Paper with Ethics Reflection Questions
Introduction
You’ve spent this session thinking about moral-ethical dilemmas you’ve faced or heard about that you either resolved or failed to resolve, but hopefully learned from. You may have never given much thought to ethical theory or to what unconsciously held ethical premises/paradigms.
For this assignment, you will concentrate on the following case:
Jane Doe is a University X nursing student. Jane is in the eighth week of an ethics course called “Introduction to Ethics.”
Jane copied work done two months ago in the same class by her friend John Doe for the week one discussion (with a different professor). John told Jane that she could use his work because his professor never used Turnitin.com to check any of the students’ work. John claimed to have gotten an A on the project as well.
In week two, Jane paid ten dollars to StudentPapering.com for a week two essay written by a student (not John Doe) who had taken the same course four months before. StudentPapering guarantees that all of its archived work is of high quality and cannot be mistaken for plagiarism. Jane then uploaded an exact copy of the week two assignment’s work.
In week three, Jane paid a PaperingStudent.com employee ten dollars to write a brand new essay for her after sharing the essay assignment instructions with the employee.
Jane made use of her Esperanto skills in week four. She was short on time and found an article on the week four topic written by an Esperanto professor. Moogle Translate was used to translate Esperanto into English, and the translated text served as her week four paper.
Jane was late for the fifth week in a row. Jane uploaded a blank paper on purpose, hoping to later claim it was an innocent mistake and avoid a late penalty. She had done the same thing in a previous History class (with an earlier paper from the History class rather than a blank) and had not received a late penalty.
Jane submitted work from a nursing course she took a year ago for her discussion posting in her current class in week six. She simply copied and pasted the work she had worked so hard on a year before (despite University X’s prohibition on’self-plagiarism’). Jane was certain that her Nursing instructor had never used Turnitin.com or another plagiarism detection tool to check that work.
Jane copied and pasted work from website.com for the paper in week seven. Jane did not use any quotation marks or other evidence to demonstrate that the text was not written by her.
Because Jane’s Ethics professor did not use Turnitin.com or another method to check papers and postings for any issues, the professor graded all of Jane’s work without knowing about Jane’s actions throughout the class. Jane believes her actions are morally justified because her financial situation makes it impossible for her to devote enough time to school (despite the fact that other students are well-off enough to do so) and her religion forbids cheating, but Jane disobeys her religion’s teachings.
Instructions Create a reflective assessment of your learning experience and the collaborations you engaged in throughout this session now that you’ve had the chance to formally explore ethics. You will submit the following:
A reflection in writing
Address Jane Doe in your written reflection and respond to the following:
Restate your moral theory from the week eight discussion (You can revise it if you wish). Which of the following two ethical theories best apply to it? What’s the deal with those two?
Apply your personal moral philosophy developed in week eight discussion to Jane Doe’s case now. Use it to decide whether Jane Doe’s actions were ethical or unethical in light of your own moral philosophy.
Consider whether some of these instances of ethical transgressions are more serious than others. Explain.
To deal with students like Jane, propose a course of social action and a solution based on egoism, utilitarianism, the “veil of ignorance” method, deontological principles, and/or a theory of justice. Consider social values such as those relating to lifestyles while assessing the needs of various populations (for instance, those of differing religions and economic status).
