Paper on Family Services and Evidence-Based Practice
Assignment
Consider your childhood, from birth to the age of eighteen. Consider an incident, a problem, or a special need that you or your family experienced. All of these problems could have resulted in stress, conflict, or the need for family adjustment and/or treatment.
Pick a topic from your upbringing that you feel comfortable talking about. Anything that you identify as stressful can be considered a stressful moment. The objective of this paper, aside from being conscious, is to combine your own history with what you’ve studied in this course. This will be proven in your paper by integrating your textbook and course learning. Make sure the text book is correctly cited and that you have a reference page. To aid in the flow of the text, use relevant headings throughout.
My father served in the United States Army as an active duty soldier from the time I was born until I graduated from high school. The challenge/sadness my mother and I endured while my father was gone to Iraq at the start of Operation Enduring Freedom is the topic I’d like to discuss. I was nine years old at the time. The Family Readiness Group, which my mother and I used, was located on a military station (FRG Meetings). We also made use of our Christian faith and religion.
Part 1: Describe the stressful situation, as well as your developmental stage, services, and culture.
Outline the problem(s) and think about the following:
Describe your stage of growth (cite the text book)
What exactly were the problems? How did your developmental stage connect with the issue (how did your developmental stage influence how you experienced the event and/or how did the timing of the event affect your development)? Don’t forget to cite your textbook!
Did you get help with this problem or experience?
If so, what kind of services do you offer? Make sure to consider the services specified in the textbooks.
If not, what made your family decide against it? (Example: What if there were no services available? Did you think your family would be able to handle it on their own?)
What happened if you got services or didn’t get services?
How did your family’s culture influence the challenges they were dealing with or how they interacted with services?
Part 2: From a professional standpoint, how to apply the book and course content
From a professional standpoint, how would you have approached your family to persuade them to use services? (combine what you’ve learnt about the role of a social worker so far)
Consider the Webb text’s descriptions of social work roles (educator, therapist, advocate, etc.). Which responsibilities in your family might be beneficial in dealing with your stressful situation?
Provide a description of three (3) recent research publications (from 2010 or later) that are pertinent to the family’s problem. Explain the context/research and how it relates to your family.
Apply knowledge from the text book and the articles you researched above to identify an evidence-based intervention (effective treatment modality) to address the difficulty the family was facing; this will also take some research on your part. Make certain to cite your sources.
Why did you chose this intervention based on the issue, strengths, culture, and developmental stage of your family?
What would be the most effective way for this evidence-based intervention/program to work with your family?
What would be the obstacles to implementation, whether they are personal to your family or to the EBP as a whole?
Is the EBP sensitive to your family’s cultural needs?
What did this assignment teach you?
How will you put what you’ve learnt into practice as a Social Worker?
