Outline for ARTH 1130 Research Essay (one page, 12 point font, double-spaced) (ten percent)
The goal of this exercise is to help you plan a well-organized research project. The project will be comparative (it will include two works of art, relics, or monuments from the same time period). We’re looking for evidence that you’ve selected content for your research essay that is both intriguing to you and relevant to the class. You will demonstrate in this proposal that you have carefully chosen artworks and texts to begin answering a guiding research question. While your solution to this research question will emerge as you read, think, and write, we would like to see you attempt an answer or a thesis statement for the proposal.
Where appropriate, write in paragraphs and label the sections of the proposal as follows:
1) Choose two objects from one time (pieces of art, artifacts, or monuments) to compare and contrast in your essay.
Use the dates in the Kleiner texts as a guide, or make sure your two things were made within 100 years of each other if you’re choosing from a non-Euro-American heritage.
You are free to choose something not covered in the textbook, but make sure you have knowledge about the objects you select.
Images of your artefacts and their titles, if appropriate, the names of their makers if available, the date of their production, and their present location of display should all be included. (two percent) 2) A research question and thesis statement (or response to your query) targeted at elucidating some sort of relationship between the things. The following are some basic outlines of potential study questions: What criteria may we use to compare and contrast the things’ quality (why is one better or worse than the other, and by what standard)? How do the materials utilized in these things, as well as the technology employed to create them, influence their shape? How have the (social, political, and economic) forces of history influenced the makers of these artifacts in their creative process? What role did these things play in the history of which they are a part? What grounds do art historians use to incorporate these objects in particular national traditions or cultures? What role do the objects play in the formation of a group or a person’s identity? In what ways do the things make a social or political statement? To what goal do the objects use representation and/or abstraction techniques? How do the objects interact or function in their display environments? After you’ve asked your question, come up with a thesis statement to answer it. In total, this should be a paragraph long. Declare your question and explain how you came to it. (three percent) 3) A summary of the inherent and extrinsic characteristics of the objects and their histories that you will discuss in your essay. Material or formal characteristics of the things are intrinsic factors. Extrinsic variables are features of the objects’ social, political, historical, and technological surroundings. This should be a single paragraph. (three percent) 4) A bibliography of at least 5 sources you’ll use in your research (excluding Kleiner). Include all of the information you can locate on your sources, such as the author’s name, title, publication date, and location. For this bibliography, see a style guide (MLA or Chicago are preferred). Non-academic sources are allowed to make up no more than two of your sources (i.e. magazine articles or reviews; exhibition or curatorial statements; statements from artists or curators in recorded interviews or presentations). Academic sources should be used for the remaining three sources (i.e. articles from peer-reviewed journals; books; conference proceedings or recorded academic lectures). (two percent)
