Problem
The year is 2021, and August is the month. The weather has been exceptionally hot and humid this summer. As a Health and Safety Representative, you work for a Niagara Falls-based construction company. A contract to dismantle the Bruce Nuclear Power Station near Kincardine, Ontario has been given to your organization. Since the beginning of the summer, your employees have been on the job. One of your employees is named Fred. Fred has been with your company for almost 20 years. Fred is a 50-year-old man with a friendly demeanor and a heavyset build. Fred is well-liked by his bosses and coworkers because he is a hard worker who never complains about his responsibilities. Fred, on the other hand, has recently been acting oddly. Roberta is the captain of his crew. Roberta observes that Fred isn’t himself.Fred, for example, is always rubbing his wrists and lower back.
Fred expresses his disappointment with his hands’ absence of feeling. Fred becomes angry and frequently asks Roberta to repeat herself or speak louder. Roberta is concerned and asks for your help. You agree to investigate it. On a hot, humid afternoon, you head out to see what Fred is up to on the job site. You get exactly what you see. Outside in the brilliant sunlight, Fred is breaking up concrete with a massive jack hammer, right adjacent to the nuclear power plant. Fred is dressed in blue slacks and a tank top for a relaxed look. Fred isn’t wearing any kind of personal defense equipment (PPE). He’s hot and bothered, and his face, head, shoulders, arms, and hands are sunburned.
You create a wave to get Fred’s attention. You approach Fred as he sets down the jackhammer, and you strike up a conversation with him. You want to know more about Fred’s work. He appeared to be a little agitated. He also seems to be having trouble understanding what you’re saying. After repeating your question(s) several times, Fred claims he’s been using the jackhammer to break out a substantial amount of old poured concrete. The concrete has a lot of weight to it. It’s taking an eternity, according to Fred. He has been operating the jackhammer by himself for the previous seven weeks, sometimes for 4-5 hours every day.
It’s up to you to assess the scenario. You must create a report detailing five different hazards associated with Fred’s job or task. Consider the origins of each hazard. Then you must calculate the risk associated with each of the listed risks and explain how you came to that conclusion. Then, for each of the hazards you’ve identified, you’ll recommend a suitable control method.Explain why each of the controls you propose is necessary.
Finally, explain how you intend to evaluate the effectiveness of the steps you’ve recommended and implemented.
