Neural sciences, genetics, psychology and social-cultural sciences have been theoretical and clinical contributions to this topic. How do these aspects effect psychopathology’s expression, classification, diagnosis, and prevalence and why is a multi-dimensional integrative approach crucial for the nurse?

The history of mental disease diagnosis is full of examples of cultural standards and prejudices interfering with a diagnosis and distorting it. As a result, typical conduct and guidelines are pathologized as a disease or ailment. One example would be Alan Turing, a notable 20th-century British computer scientist who helped to build modern computers and decrypt German code in the Second World War. He was convicted of gross indecency for being gay in England in 1952. Turing was obliged to undergo hormone therapy for 12 months by the courts and the British Government could no longer function. At the time, homosexuality in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders was identified as a mental condition and most Western countries became criminalised. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) finally eliminated homosexuality from the DSM only in 1973.
In history, the diagnostic procedure has been utilized to pathologize persons who fell beyond the normative standard of human conduct. This approach often stigmatized people and prevented people from being properly cared for. It is also important to address cultural factors that influence how you understand the behavior of a customer as a clinician and how cultural problems influence how a customer expresses behaviour. The history of psychopathology and the evolution of theoretical viewpoints on the area are discussed this week.Students will learn objective:
