This is an excellently written essay but with one big problem- it only focuses on detergents!
Please do not focus on detergents because this will cause you to lose a lot of marks. You need to talk about other green products like electronics and cars.
Please change to include other green products as well, otherwise how you’ve written this essay is great.Green vs Conventional Detergents
Detergents have become a part of our life, and billions of people use them every day. Detergents have existed for over a century, and have proven to be more effective than soap, since they do not precipitate in hard water (Kogawa, 2017). At present, there are thousands of detergents that have different properties like color, smell, price, and package size. Unfortunately, most conventional detergents are synthetic and are harmful to the environment, and the market promotes green or organic detergents more frequently. Customers must clearly understand the differences between green and conventional cleaners in order to choose the best product, since they have varied properties, prices, as well as advantages, and disadvantages.
Differences between Green and Conventional Products
There is a considerable difference between green and conventional detergents. First of all, organic or green products are made of natural sources. Green detergents are derived from natural materials, mostly plants, which make them more environmentally friendly. On the other side, conventional detergents are synthetic and mostly contain non-organic components (Brove, 2019). The second major difference is that organic detergents are degradable. The main reason green products gain popularity is that they can be easily recycled without any significant harm to the environment (Chu & Yazdanifard, 2013). At the same time, conventional detergents can contain up to 80% of non-degradable components, which are hard to recycle (Kogawa, 2017). The third difference is that organic detergents are eco-friendly. Conventional compounds are not safe. Most of them contain phosphates that cause significant harm to soil and water (Kogawa, 2017). Green detergent compounds are similar to soap and do not contain any hazards. Additionally, they do not pollute water and soil, making them a safe alternative.
Price Comparison
There are many discussions regarding the cost efficiency of green and conventional detergent products. The difference in price is minimal. A survey conducted by Ashkin Group showed that the total cost for green cleaning ranges from the same price to 10% higher (Espinoza et al., 2011). Apart from having the same price, organic components help manufacturers to reduce the price of the final product. Most green cleaners come in the form of concentrates. Such form helps to save a tremendous amount of water during production. Some concentrates have a 1:128 delusion ratio (Espinoza et al., 2011), which means that one ounce of concentrate creates 128 ounces of cleaning compound. Such an approach saves water, as well as the costs for energy and transportation. Furthermore, concentrates are diluted on local facilities with the help of modern diluting systems that reduce waste from improper dilution.
Additionally, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado states reported about saving over 45% of cleaning costs using such concentrates (Espinoza et al., 2011). All of these factors demonstrate that green products are cost-efficient, and should be considered as a cheap and effective substitute for conventional cleaning products.
Advantages of Conventional Products
Conventional products have several advantages, which make people use them on a global scale. First of all, the production of conventional detergents and other cleaning compounds is hugely efficient. Most solutions contain various salts and phosphates, which are highly available and make products profoundly effective in cleaning. The second advantage is that this industry provides a large number of job opportunities. Facilities that produce cleaning products require large numbers of employees to operate and, therefore, employ thousands of workers. Conventional farmers, for example, use larger areas for farming and consequently hire more people (Green Garage, 2016). One more advantage is that the production of cleaning compounds is cheap. Facilities operate on the scale of a country and produce thousands of gallons of detergents every day. Most expenses go for raw materials, wages, and transportation. Nevertheless, there are enough disadvantages to think about if the population needs such products.
Disadvantages of Conventional Products
Three reasonable facts make conventional detergents and cleaners harmful to our society and environment. The first one is the presence of phosphates. They create foam that prevents oxygen and light from entering the water, which impacts flora and fauna (Kogawa, 2017). The second fact is that detergents cause harm to human health. They are not healthy to breathe, harmful to skin, and can cause a rash on sensitive skin as well (Brove, 2019). Additionally, many detergents contain 1,4-dioxane, also known as Polyethylene glycol, which is a potential human carcinogen (FDA, 2019). The third fact is that the production of conventional detergents is harmful to small businesses and producers of green cleaning products. Big manufactures dominate the market by providing stores with cheap and efficient cleaning products. Therefore, small companies and stores have lesser room for growth and development. Fortunately, green products attract more and more consumers every year, and there are several reasons for such growth of interest.
Advantages of Green Products
Tree significant advantages make green products much-needed. The first one is the environmental safety of green products. They are made of natural materials, which make their products less harmful. Additionally, the manufacturing of organic cleaners is safer and produces less hazardous wastes (Brove, 2019). Green cleaners do not pollute the environment, as well as do not cause harm to the human body. The second advantage is that these products are highly degradable, which reduces the cost of use and make a lesser impact on the environment. The third advantage is that green products create an eco-friendly outlook for any business, which attracts more and more customers every year. With the rising trend of environmental safety and eco-consciousness, the demand for green products rises as well, allowing companies to produce and sell more green products for people. All these factors contribute to the increasing demand for green cleaning products, which also have disadvantages.
Disadvantages of Green Products
Four disadvantages prevent people from using green cleaning products. The first one is that green cleaning products have a lower cleaning efficiency than conventional ones. Most green and organic cleaning compounds are not as harsh and effective as synthetic ones, which increases the cleaning time and amount of water required (Chu& Yazdanifard, 2013). The second advantage is that manufacturers do not always list all ingredients of their cleaning products. They can use volatile organic compounds, phosphates, and harmful salts in their goods without mentioning such a fact. The third disadvantage is that organic compounds can be harmful as well. Not all organic and natural components are hypoallergenic. Some of them can cause an allergic reaction or harm skin, hair, and eyes. Therefore, consumers should pay extra attention to the components list to ensure that a particular cleaner is safe for them.
Conclusion
It is crucial to understand whether green or conventional products are the best option for consumers. Green detergents make a massive competition to the classic conventional analogs and have the potential to remove synthetic cleaners. They have several advantages that make them a better alternative to ready to use products. They consist of natural components, environmentally friendly and cost-efficient. Nevertheless, conventional products also have a number of advantages that keep them high in demand and create fair competition between two types of cleaning products. They are cheap, effective, and highly available. Fortunately, green products will occupy most of the market in the future, making cleaning a safe and easy process that does not harm our planet.
