Overview of the Task
Despite having a 65 percent market share in its home market of Australia, prominent Australian airline Qantas is having a difficult time, as are many other airlines around the world. Qantas has recently been losing money because to rising fuel costs and a slowing global economy, and CEO Alan Joyce faces some difficult decisions.Joyce will have to decide whether or not to sell Qantas’ frequent flyer program. Although it may seem strange for an airline to sell its frequent flyer program, Qantas’ program is much more than that. Members of this program can earn points not only by traveling with Qantas, but also by shopping at one of the airline’s corporate partners or by using one of their credit cards. Points can be redeemed for free flights as well as merchandise from a variety of stores. This rewards program is used by almost 10 million Australians, or about half of the population.
Qantas’ most valuable asset is its frequent flyer program, and selling it would help the airline get out of its current financial difficulties. Selling the program, on the other hand, would provide another corporation access to Qantas’ most loyal clients, including business and first-class passengers. In the long run, the sale has the potential to backfire and be unwise.
Research CEO Joyce’s current decision on whether or not to sell the frequent flyer program, as well as the background materials on intuitive versus logical decision-making, such as Buhler (2001) and Kourdi (2001).
