Create an 8-10 page report on the needs of a marginalized group in your organization, as well as ways to meet those needs through workshops, activities, and other events. You will be expected to be creative in your approach to the issues you encounter, and you will be expected to use both class resources and original research as you progress.
Conduct the necessary research for a report on an organization’s ability to repair or improve its service to marginalized workers’ needs. Choose a group (women, people of color, the elderly, people with disabilities, transgender people, etc.) and an organization (which can be fictitious) to base your report on.
Include the following in your paper:
Choose a traditionally marginalized group in society that will require accommodations (not special treatment) to navigate the social structures in organizations that have historically discriminated against them structurally.
Select a charitable organization. One you know needs the help of an outside professional (you!) who can assist them in meeting the needs of the group you’ve chosen to support.
Describe the problems in detail. Describe the issues in detail, including how the needs are not being met and how they should be met.
Make a proposal with ideas for workshops, speaker series, book clubs, film screenings, outings, and anything else that comes to mind. The concepts should be well-considered and mapped to the requirements (this is the assessment portion of the assignment).
Finally, describe the strategies and plans of action that the organization can use to make your proposals a success.
The goal of the assignment is for you to engage in a need, develop a plan (or plans) of action for the organization, and offer that organization ways to improve where you see the needs.
The portfolio project is a research paper of 8-10 pages (approximately 3,500 words). Your paper must be properly cited and formatted using the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and the APA style guide (Links to an external site.). The quality of your writing, including syntax and grammar, will be graded in addition to the content of your final paper. It is strongly advised that you proofread your assignment thoroughly before submitting it.
The paper must demonstrate what you’ve learned about current issues concerning social class experiences, as well as how the many variables we’ve discussed in class influence society in the United States. Your paper should be comprehensive and provide a thoughtful analysis of the topic. References to scholarly materials should be used in the paper (rather than on introductory textbooks, popular website writings, or musings). That is, provide evidence to back up your claims.
The most common errors in essay writing are (a) simply summarizing the topic without analyzing it or discussing your points of view, and (b) failing to connect the subject to the larger context of race, gender, and ethnicity as discussed in class and found in the readings. Considering how your research might yield a different approach to racism or discrimination is one example of adequately including the broader contexts.
