This is a PAIRED assignment – and only in very special situations will a group of three (3) students be allowed. The word ‘group’ will be used to refer to the pair in which you will be working. Because of the nature of the assignment you would be well advised to start working on the assignment way ahead of the deadline.
Please remember that this company is a fictitious company and bears no resemblance or link to any company with the same or a similar name.
The following is the scenario that you will be addressing:
Your company currently has no presence in your chosen market but is considering the possibility and the viability of entering one of the following markets:
- Cambodia
- Myanmar
- Thailandthe market i chosen
(All that you have to do is to choose one of the three markets – there is no need to make market comparisons of the three countries above to justify your choice of market).
Your company has had no experience in any of the countries listed and realizes that ideally it should understand the dynamics of markets in its chosen country, the potential size of the selected market and the business environment in which it will operate. Your organization is well aware of the fact that wrong decisions can be very costly. As such, your firm wants to gather as many facts and as much information about your chosen market/country as possible in order to make an informed decision for its entry into that particular market.
You will need to critically analyze how your company should assess the market (in terms of the market’s potential size and structure), potential challenges and difficulties in entering this market, possible entry mode(s), and the overall general business environments of your chosen country. In addition, you may also want to understand the cultural differences in the chosen country so as to (a) avoid making culturally sensitive mistakes and (b) to capitalize on opportunities presented by these cultural differences.
Your company
(Please note that the name of the company that you are to advise as listed here is fictional and you should not look it up on the Internet).
Your company, KidsNutrition (henceforth referred to as KN) has been a market leader in the sales and marketing of a range of childcare and maternal care products. Products from KN include, among others, Vitalmin (a multi-vitamin syrup for children between the ages of 1 and 10 years) and VitalGrow which is a form of booster milk-based formula for children between the ages of one and ten.
Vitalmin has a once-a-day dosage of 5 ml of the syrup. It is recommended that children consume Vitalmin everyday. The product retails for NZ$10 a bottle here in New Zealand and each bottle has 120 ml. Each 120 ml bottle is packed in its own carton.
VitalGrow is packed in cans weighing 500g and 1 kg of powder. VitalGrow is meant to help children who are not growing as well as they should to grow better and faster and to gain weight. The can has a scoop and 4 scoops of the powder (40 grams) is added to 200 ml of water to make one serving of the product. In New Zealand the product retails for NZ$15 for the 500g pack and NZ$28 for the 1 kg pack.
Vitalmin and VitalGrow are the products of interest in this particular situation. In New Zealand these two products have been very well received and pediatricians and pediatric nurses have often recommended these products to parents whose children have needed that little extra boost in nutrition and vitamins.
Having become relatively well known in New Zealand KN is now looking at expanding overseas and has been considering one of the three countries above. You need to choose one of these listed markets and to then gather as much information as possible so as to enable KD to make a wise and informed decision as to how it should enter its selected market. Your company realizes that success with Vitalmin and VitalGrow could mean the further introduction of more of its product range into the selected markets in the future. The directors of the company have asked you to ascertain the potential size of your chosen market and to inform them of what they need to do in order to make the launch into that country successful.
