Read the Poitier et al. study to prepare for this Discussion, and then go over what you learned about the “Focused research questions and research hypothesis” step of the research process. Consider what the most important information about that step to share with your colleagues. The class will collaborate to develop a research strategy for assessing the rite of passage program described in the assigned article.
Post an explanation of how you would complete the “Focused research questions and research hypothesis” step of the research process.

Methods of research for social workers (8th ed.). Pearson, New York, NY.
A professor discovered an article about a treatment program for substance-abusing African-American women that included their children and aimed to preserve their families about 15 years ago, before evidence-based practice became a standard to which to aspire. The program was based on African-centered theory principles. The professor thought the program was well-designed and strongly encouraged students to read the article and try to replicate the program’s ideas, if not the program itself. After furthering her education, particularly in the area of research, the professor looked for a follow-up on the program, possibly reporting outcomes and evidence of effectiveness, a few years later. In scholarly journals, there is no evidence of the program’s effectiveness. In fact, no evidence that the program is still active has been discovered. It’s unfortunate that what appeared to be a promising practice approach didn’t last or have the chance to benefit from evaluation.
Note: This week, as a class, you will devise a strategy for assessing the rite of passage program described in the assigned article. One step of the research process will be assigned to each student in the class:
Problems and questions to research
Identifying and utilizing prior knowledge
Research questions and hypotheses that are specific
Methods of investigation
Problems with sampling and possible solutions
Measurement
Obtaining information
Instruments for data collection
Data analysis
Dissemination of research results
