Topic Suggestion
“The bigger tragedy of Florencio Garcia’s killing, and the attempts by the state police to repudiate his murder, resides in its absolute ordinariness,” says Dr. Monica Munoz Martinez.
(Martinez, pg. 6, The Injustice) What is Martinez’s main point of contention? What do you think she believes her book will accomplish in terms of educating people about US-Mexican and Mexican-American border relations? Describe the reasons why Garcia’s murder can be classified as “ordinary?” based on both the Martinez chapter and the New York Times stories. Why does she call Garcia’s assassination “ordinary”? What were the origins of the Texas Rangers and why were they established? In the mid-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, what role did vigilantism play in border areas? Martinez cites what sources (evidence) to back up her claim. Give a specific example of one of her sources and how she employs the argument. Do you think Martinez’s argument is persuasive? Why do you think that is?

makes a claim that others may be able to refute.
It usually a single sentence in the opening paragraph that introduces your reader to your argument. The rest of the document, or the essay’s body, gathers and organizes information to persuade the reader of your interpretation’s logic.
