Criteria for Evidence-Based Practice Assignment
List group name, number, and group members:
Please use the template provided at the end of this document to submit both parts of the assignment as a single document.
- PICO(T) 5%
- Each group member posts a PICO(T) question on a medical problem.
- The team asks one PICO(T) question with faculty feedback.
PART 1
- Search 5%
- This is to become familiar with the process on how to search different databases. Conduct the searches using the evidence sources listed below. If you are not finding 2+ pages of results, broaden your search terms.
Examples: Women aged 20-30 > change to women > change to adults.
Nasal vestibulitis > nasal infections > skin infections
- Copy the first two pages of results, label the search engine at the top, and attach them to the end of your paper. You must include a screen shot of your search history in the CINAHL or Medline search that includes legible search terms used.
- Skim 4-5 of the articles your search turns up, in order to become familiar with the quality of results you found, except for the Guideline search where you’ll just review one, and the end results of your UpToDate search, which will just be one.
- CINAHL or Medline search: Your 2 screenshots of different pages for each search engine need to show your search terms and how you combined them.
- Follow the recommended approach from the library website on how to do an effective search,
- An additional resource is Module 2 of the Research & Resources in the CORE: Collaborative Orientation for Retention Excellence class. Go to Blackboard > CORE Course> Module 2: Research & Resources. You would need to email the librarian if you had any questions because the Discussion Board is not monitored at this time. for access to this foundation material. All students are invited to complete this fundamental material that was presented initially before last fall semester started.
- Google Scholar search: Use keywords you think will capture the information for which you’re looking.
- National Guidelines search: You are allowed to use guidelines from any professional organizations. Eg: American Heart Association. American Diabetes Association etc. Please provide the weblink to the source for faculty to verify it. Select one specific guideline to analyze in the table below.
- UpToDate search: Use keywords and explore how the results are presented. Skim through some of the articles. Select one article to analyze in table below.
[locate in the database file on the Moody Library home page]
- Analysis: Appraise databases [Table format] 40%
The questions listed below are the same ones in each table attached below; you’ll complete one table per search engine a-d. For CINAHL and Google Scholar you’ll skim 4-5 articles and summarize your results based on those articles. For the guideline and UpToDate you’ll answer for only one result. Answers should be short, but not simply yes or no. If a question is not applicable to the source, write N/A.
- Purpose: (5)
What is the purpose of this resource?
What type of material does it produce when searched?
- Stakeholders: (5)
What types of credentials do the authors have?
Are they individuals or associations of professionals?
Who are findings designed to help?
- Rigor (for CINAHL and Google Scholar answer these questions by summarizing the individual articles): (10)
Was a systematic method used? (Example for CINAHL: “3 articles used a systematic method- one was quantitative and two were qualitative and were appropriate designs. One article did not appear to have a systematic method used.”)
Are the strengths and limitations for the findings clearly evident?
Are health benefits/side effects/ and risks considered?
Is it (are they) peer-reviewed? (You will l need to go to a few of the cited journal’s webpages to be able to answer this. It should be stated on the journal’s home page).
- Clarity: (5)
What is the necessary level of the person to understand results- lay public, health professional, research specialist?
How clear are the recommendations?
How clinically significant are the results?
- Applicability: (5)
Are the results applicable to your question? To your specific population?
Are implications of applying results discussed?
Costs, barriers, or other consequences outlined?
- Editorial independence: (5)
Are conflicts of interest clearly identified regarding funding source and authors?
Do the authors have a vested interest in the outcome? For example, a cancer organization issuing cancer screening guidelines?
- What is (are) the level(s) of evidence found in this source? (5)
Use the pyramid of evidence from your textbook found on the back cover.
Beware: one randomized controlled trial is not Level 1 evidence! Level 1 evidence requires many studies showing similar results upon meta-analysis, that is, combining all the results for one final answer.
PART 2
- Appraise the evidence to answer your PICOT question (narrative format) 50%
This section is written narrative in portrait page layout, also located below.
Introduction (5 points)
- Compare and contrast your findings from the above searches by describing in one to two double spaced pages what you found to be the most significant differences between the databases. Answer the questions below:
- Which database was most applicable to your PICOT question, and why?
- Which database produced the most helpful articles for your question? Why?
- What resources will you return to in the future and why?
- If you think you might have gotten more effective results if you had formulated your PICO question a different way, reformulate it and answer why you made those changes.
Evidence analysis (Article summary) (30 points)
Please select 5 articles provided the highest level of evidence From all the articles you have collected through your database searches. Evaluate the usefulness and applicability of evidence for clinical practice. There is no right or wrong answer here. You are only critiquing the evidence retrieved to answer your PICOT question.
Conclusion (5 points)
Please summarily evaluate your experience with this EBP process. What went well and what you would have done differently.
