Objective
The main objective of the Research Paper is the construction of a research question connected with the lectures and readings of the course. Your research question should address the intersections between gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and class within the context of a particular social institution (family, healthcare, religion, education, mass media, political, or economic system). Your paper should provide a creative and original perspective that will enrich the existing academic debate on the particular issue selected.
Requirements and Deadlines
The final research paper (30%) must be submitted on Friday December 11, 2020, 1:30pm. The structure of the final paper must include: introduction, research question, theoretical framework, methodology, results/discussion, conclusions, and reference list (ASA style).
General Guidelines
Final Paper length should be approximately 10-15 pages, typed in 12 point Times New Roman font, and double-spaced (reference list not included in the 10 pages limit).
Clearly state your research question, theoretical framework, and methodology.
Make sure to identify a feasible research question considering your time and resource constraints. Prefer relatively narrow and specific questions instead of broad and too ambitious questions. Make sure that you clearly identify the variables that you will study, identify the independent(s) and dependent(s) variables when necessary.
Your theoretical framework must include the key concepts and theories that will guide your research, explaining how you will understand such concepts and theories, and the relationships between those concepts.
Your research question should guide the selection of the appropriate methodology. For example, a question regarding the evolution of a concept in the academic debate may require a comparative literature review of relevant academic journals. A question regarding the patterns of integration of current second generation immigrants may require an analysis of secondary quantitative data (e.g. American Community Service (ACS), Current Population Surveys (CPS), and U.S. Census data; Homeland Security data; and major surveys on immigration), or the use of narrative interviews to complement the statistical data. Finally, a question regarding patterns of media representations of interracial relations may require the definition of a sample of media texts and a detailed content analysis of those texts.
If you plan to interview human subjects, you will have to inform them of the object of your study, and assure them that their identity will be kept confidential.
