Rhetoric is simply the means, or art, of persuasion. As we have practiced in class, when examining any text, the aim of rhetorical analysis is to identify the most significant choices—of stance, of argument, of evidence and arrangement, of style, etc.—that a writer has made, and to analyze the likely effects of those choices. What is this writer’s rhetorical situation? What assumptions does the author make about audience? How does the author fulfill and subvert our expectations? And, as always, so what about it? Why does it matter?
You will first finish your Writing Portfolio with a graded draft for your rhetorical analysis. For this draft, you have your choice of one of the essays we covered in this unit. Choose one of these pieces and compose a 2-3 page close analysis, investigating their assumptions about audience and how these assumptions play out in their textual rhetoric—that is, their micro choices at the paragraph, sentence, clause, and punctuation level. While you can’t prove that an author did x to cause y, you can explore the likely implications of their individual choices. Just as we have scrutinized texts for implicit messages/meanings, so too will you scrutinize your chosen essay in question.
Your rhetorical analysis draft should not have an introduction or conclusion. You are required, however, to have a thesis and to name the target audience—both of which can be placed at the beginning on the essay.
After you submit the draft, I will provide you with a grade and comments, and your next task is to revise the rhetorical analysis, expanding the piece to 4-5 pages. This now includes an introduction and conclusion, as well as revising what you already wrote and expanding upon the ideas you have presented. See your draft as a seed in which to nurture and grow. You might notice in your revision that you have a better idea of how you want to approach your original claims, and my comments will most likely offer you coaching in where you can strengthen and where you are already strong.
Remember that the final version of your rhetorical analysis is your first formal essay of the semester. You are required to have an introduction with a thesis statement and a conclusion, and, as always, work in MLA style with in-text citations and a works cited.
Tips:
1.) Don’t pick an essay unless you personally find its content/style engaging. If you find it boring to read, it will be tedious to analyze, and your lack of enthusiasm will surely make itself known on the page.

2.) For some of these authors, rhetorical situation might be more complicated. In such a case, don’t ignore the original intended audience, but don’t devote so much time to historical research that you ignore how the words still function to persuade today. If you don’t know the rhetorical situation of your author—what they’re known for, their profession and age, what type of publication the essay is in, etc—you’re going to struggle in terms of digging into their choices and how these choices might be motivated by reader expectations and the ethos of a given publication.
3.) Finally, this paper isn’t about whether or not you agree with a particular author. It’s about your ability to notice, summarize, and analyze that author’s use of rhetoric. You might disagree with some of Gatto’s points and agree with others, but the point isn’t to argue his case, expand upon it, or attempt to refute it.
*Any essay submitted without in-text citations and/or a works cited page will be returned to the student and will accumulate late deductions until a correct essay is submitted.
