Financial Accounting: Health Organization Analysis (HOA) Project
At the end of the semester, your HOA project will consist of the following sections.
- You will electronically save the annual reports where you used the information to perform your calculations
- Document copies of newsletters or newspaper events to demonstrate current events with your company
- Identification of a competitor and complete a detailed SWOT analysis.
- You will complete TWO SWOT analyses – one for your chosen company and one for the top competitor
- For each weakness or threat, propose an action plan to mitigate the competition.
- Based on the ratios of your company, complete a written analysis about the current state of the company. This should be prepared as if it were to be presented to an executive team (COO, CEO, CFO). Use the financial analysis to back up your proposal for future plans for the company. (ie…3-5 year strategic plan)
Components of your Project – Part ONE
- Introduction – Identify your company by writing a summary that includes the following:
Name of the Chief Executive Officer
Location of the Home Office
Ending date of the last fiscal year
Description of the principal products of services that the company provides
Main geographical area of activity
Name of the company’s independent accountants or auditors. Explain what the auditors
had to say about the company’s financial statements.
The most recent price of the company’s ticker and its dividend per share. Be sure to
provide the date for this information.
- Industry Situation and Company Plans
Be sure to read the company’s outlook and the market situation. Be sure to read the letter to stockholders.
Discuss relevant information about the company’s plans – significant future plans?
If you were the CEO – what are your plans and expectations for the company within the next five to ten years.
Do you agree with the current management team? What are you basing decisions on?
Conduct a SWOT analysis for your company. This includes a discussion of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.
For weaknesses and threats – need to identify what would be your mitigation strategy?
Strengths Weaknesses
Opportunities Threats
Components of your Project – Part TWO
You will complete the financial analysis for your company PLUS the top competitor company
Two sets of financials will be submitted
- Financial Statements
Review the Income Statements. Is this a Single-step or Multi-Step format? Determine the gross profit, income from operations, and net income for the last two years. Comment on the increases or decreases in these amounts.
Review the Balance Sheet. How does the formula “Assets = Liabilities + Stockholder’s Equity” apply for the past two years of the company?
Review the Statement of Cash Flows. Are the cash flows from operations more or less than the net income for the past two year? Is the company expanding through investing activity or through operations? What is the company’s most important source of financing? Overall- does the company have cash to support increased operations from the past two years?
- Accounting Policies
What are the significant accounting policies – if any? Are these related to revenue recognition, cash, short term investments, merchandise inventories and/or property and equipment?
- Financial Analysis
For the past two years – calculate and discuss significant findings. Please do not simply calculate the numbers for each of these formulas. Discuss what the numbers mean in respect to your company.
If calculating these numbers resulted in a decline in performance – state one or two possible solutions to improve your company’s status.
