Research Paper Requirements: You are to write an argumentative essay that contains the following: A 3-component claim with appropriate qualifier(s) (This is what I had and was approved by the instructor: Because half of the students studying a health care related topic are in nursing, the salary of the nurses should be increased substantially to attract efficient health professionals into the field.) Introduction that presents the problem (which is the exigency — the reason you are writing the paper) A paragraph that offers history of the problem At least 3 strong arguments in support of your claim At least two separate sources in support of each or your arguments Minimum of 6 separate sources, (specified in the next bullet) Source Types: one hardcopy and at least 5 internet sources need to be derived from non-reference databases from Butler’s library databases (http://www.butlercc.edu/libraries). Links to an external site. The “Articles” and “Research Guides” tabs will be the most helpful to you. This paper is to be based on library research and you should NOT include any websites, blogs or reference material. (Remember Dr. Rothenberg!) Helpful hint, do not underestimate the value of visiting a brick and mortar library and discussing your claim with a research librarian. You can also initiate a virtual chat with a research librarian through the Nixon library tab. Their job is to help students with these types of searches — use their expertise! Find sources from which you can pull several pieces of information. Do not just use a source once and then move to the next one. Another great source consideration is a person — an expert in the field in which the topic falls. Maybe you know someone. I have had students have good luck with email *** Minimum of 15 citations (this means 15 different pieces of research). Ideally, these are equally distributed among your three arguments. Do not over-support one argument while under-supporting the others. In danger of committing the logical fallacy of Ad Misericordium (which means feel sorry for the reader), to be honest, thoughtful research papers over fresh, current topics almost always score higher than tired, overdone, and beat-to-death topics like the big three: Abortion, Marijuana, and the Death Penalty. That’s not to say that these topics aren’t important and current — far be it! However, they are too religiously charged and complex to do justice in a short research paper. In an attempt to address the problems listed above while at the same time keeping your interests in mind, I want you to write your research paper over a current controversial topic within your field of study. For example, if you are an education major, think about some of the controversies in education at this time. Some examples might be online education, homework, individual learning plans for all students, etc. If your major is nursing, perhaps consider: recruitment and retention, workplace hazards, long hours, etc. Remember that your claim must be argumentative — it is your opinion with which others might disagree. The easiest way to approach this is to think of problems in the field you are studying. Yes — they all have them! If you can’t think of something, talk to others in the profession at this time. -Introduction Paragraph & Claim Exigency Kairos Nursing Argumentative Essay |
