Description/Paper Instructions
There are three sections to this evaluation. To complete this evaluation, click on each of the items listed below.
Part I: Examine Financial Data from the Organization
You work for Arizona Health Services (AHS), a huge hospital system, as an administrator. You’ve been tasked with determining the financial viability of buying Jiranna Healthcare, a managed care business in the San Jose area. You will undertake a 5-year review of Jiranna Healthcare’s operational and financial data for this component of the Performance Task in order to decide whether it is a desirable acquisition. Financial statements to study can be found under “Jiranna Finances.”
Prepare a financial analysis that is two to three pages long. The content and depth of your analysis must be prioritized. A 5-year trend analysis, covering the most current year of available data, is expected unless otherwise specified.
Complete the following analysis:
Calculate Jiranna Healthcare’s 5-year net sales, operating expenses, operating income, and net income. Interpret the generated data and explain the relevance of the trend results once the calculations are finished.
Calculate the overall profit margin, asset turnover, return on assets, and return on net worth over the course of five years. Interpret the data that results from the computations to assess the company’s profitability.
Calculate the current ratio over five years, cash on hand every day, and working capital. Interpret the data and analyze the company’s liquidity once the calculations are finished.
Calculate the debt-to-income ratio over five years and the interest-to-income ratio. Interpret the statistics and explain the company’s long-term solvency once the calculations are finished.
Perform a DuPont analysis for each of the last five years. Interpret the results of the computations to identify the company’s specific DuPont characteristics (e.g., total margin, total asset turnover, and equity multiplier) and trends over the analysis period.
In the end, a decision must be made. Would you recommend Jiranna Healthcare to a friend? Why?
Case Study #2 (Part II)
The next phase of this Performance Task requires you to perform a series of calculations and then evaluate the results to make recommendations based on your findings. It is critical to demonstrate both your work and calculations, as well as how these calculations support your conclusions. Make a point of explaining your thinking. Your quantitative analyses will be graded, as well as the quality of the evidence you provide to back up your conclusions.
Assume you are a Jiranna Healthcare administrator tasked with analyzing cash-flow data in order to estimate the costs and advantages of launching a new capital project. Read “Capital Project Case Study, Part 1” for more information. After that, fill out the “Capital Project Case Study, Part 2” worksheet, which contains cash-flow data (costs and benefits) for the proposal. Download and save the Excel spreadsheet, then fill in the blanks with the information provided:
Calculate each year’s cash inflows and outflows.
Make the following calculations:
the present worth of the future (NPV)
Internal rate of return on investment (IRR)
Internal rate of return has been altered (MIRR)
Term of repayment
Payback period with a discount
Provide your recommendation for whether the project is appropriate in a 1- to 2-page report, presuming Jiranna has a corporate policy of not accepting projects that take more than 3.5 years to pay for themselves and an 11 percent cost of capital.
Part Three: Make a budgeting assessment
Jiranna Healthcare employs you as an administrator. You’ve been given the task of doing a budget variance study, which entails comparing budgeted workload, revenue, and expenses for a variety of service lines to actual workload, revenue, and expenses for those service lines.
Open the paper “Variance Analysis Case Study,” which contains information on Jiranna Healthcare’s expenses, revenue, and inpatient product lines.
Analyze the information and write a three- to four-page report. Answer each of the five questions below in your report. Show the calculations you used to answer the question in each scenario. Then, explain why you came to that conclusion and how your calculations back it up.
What was the hospital’s original profit prediction (assuming no depreciation, taxes, or other issues)? What is the hospital’s revised profit forecast for FY11 at this point in the fiscal year?
Which inpatient service lines are costing more than they should? After accounting for workload increases, which inpatient service lines are above budget?
If you were in charge of a fee-for-service hospital, what two actions would you recommend at the halfway point of the year? In other words, what are the issue areas on which you would concentrate your efforts, and who might be able to offer suggestions for “best practices” based on their results?
If you were in charge of a capitated hospital, what two actions would you recommend at the halfway point of the year? In this example, the revenue spreadsheet would be substituted with a $50 million overall budget to work with (rather than being able to bill for each episode of patient care). The budgets of federal, state, county, and city hospitals are typically capped. A fixed per member, per month (PMPM) capitated approach is also used by many HMOs.
