Colonial Legacies and Central Conflicts (Spain and the Aztecs). Discuss some of the colonial era’s “central conflicts,” our “colonial legacies,” which would shape the region for centuries to come: Native peoples’ conquest, subjugation, and exploitation (native slavery, the encomienda); diseases and demographic collapse (which ones? When? What are the ramifications? ); the transatlantic slave trade (how did this happen?). How many are there? To what regions and for what purposes? ), as well as the emergence of race as a hegemonic concept (why is this important? ), and patriarchy as a hegemonic concept. and talk about how these would affect the modern era (the 19th-21st century).
