Description of the question
Following the Civil War, the United States had to recuperate from the conflict, deal with western expansion, and deal with entirely new economic formations. However, the most pressing challenges would be slavery’s legacies and increasing diversity in the decades following the Civil War. Reconstruction was partially a period of northern victors’ military domination of the south. Former slaves now had freedom and new prospects, but they still had to contend with old prejudices and the emergence of new barriers. Immigrants from Europe and Asia arrived in enormous numbers, but they were met with political and social barriers. Women continued to fight for their rights. Nonetheless, by the 1920s, America had become extremely diversified. Consider the events, policies, and laws that occurred from 1865 and the 1920s. Take one of the proposed perspectives below, draw from the materials given, and write a paper that includes specific examples and reasons to support your claim.
Possible positions—you can take the pro or con side in each case:
For the majority of the post-Civil War period, the South’s Lost Cause myth effectively subverted and impacted race policy in the United States. (Alternatively, you can argue that it did not)
Despite the deep prejudices of a few, political policy in the decades following the Civil War primarily favored variety and “the melting pot.” (Alternatively, you may argue that political policies did not)
Between 1865 and 1930, reform movements such as the Progressives and agricultural populists paved the path for greater democracy. (Or you can argue that these movements did not occur)Select one of the positions above as your position—your thesis—after giving general thought to your readings thus far and any general investigation. (You might select the opposite position after conducting more thorough investigation.) This occurs when critical thinking and enquiry are used. It’s possible that your final paper will take a different stance than you anticipated.) Organize your paper in the following manner, addressing the following issues:
The thesis statement in your introductory paragraph will be the position you chose (from the list above)—or something similar to it.
Use three particular instances from different decades between 1865 and 1930 to back up your claim. You can choose to focus on a specific race, gender, or immigrant status, or you can utilize instances that apply to all of them.
Explain why the other viewpoint falls short of yours.
Consider your current situation: In what ways does the background you’ve presented shape or influence challenges at work or in your preferred profession? The paper should be between 500 and 750 words long. The body of the paper should usually be three to four pages long. (These calculations exclude the title page and the References page.) Lines should be double-spaced. The formatting instructions are listed below.

Research and References: You must use a MINIMUM of three sources, one of which must be the Schultz textbook. The last two sources should be chosen from the list below. This isn’t open-ended Googling; it’s guided research. At the conclusion, you’ll get an alphabetized list of Reference entries in APA format. Short, APA-style in-text citations will be properly put in the body of the document, and these in-text citations will correspond to the References section at the conclusion. Use only the references given below for your paper, unless your instructor specifies otherwise. (Of course, you can read a variety of sites for “starting research.”)

Make sure to use the Schultz text as a source for Assignment 1. At least two of the other sources indicated above should be used. Some of the sources are “primary” sources from the period under investigation. Some of the sources listed below can be accessed directly or through Blackboard’s primary sources link. Each week’s list of primary sources is different. Others can be found in Blackboard’s Library tab, which is located on the left side of the screen; once there, you can run a “keyword” search of the article title.
