This assignment will help you think about what constitutes interpersonal communication, what constitutes qualitative communication between two or more individuals, and how important images are when we communicate with one another. We discussed how humans create patterns of interaction together in the first three lessons of the semester; how technology shapes our understandings of self, other, and society (Lesson 1); the role of language in (re)producing these patterns (Lesson 2); and how these patterns may relate to co-cultural connections and insights, and perhaps even power and privilege (Lesson 3). Given our many assumptions about the quality of our interpersonal communication, our reliance on technology and even visuals, and our effectiveness as communicators, this project will help us reframe our communication through the lens of qualitative interpersonal communication.
Instructions
Your objective is to deliver a vital message (from a number of sample scenarios below) to a friend or family member via text messaging using just emoji (but no numerical or bitmoji), gifs, and/or memes. You are not permitted to utilize typed words, and you are not permitted to phone a friend or family member to explain this project to them before to completing it, since this would negate the objective of the task. You’ll also take screenshots and share photographs from your conversation, which you’ll use in your post and analysis.
You should utilize one of the scenarios I’ve developed as a starting point or as a springboard. If you don’t feel comfortable with one of the scenarios or think you can come up with something more entertaining, please feel free to make your ownbut you must first get permission from me.
