Description/Paper Instructions Essay on Active Agents vs. Passive Participants
Description of the question
To begin writing your papers, you will conduct preliminary research into the primary and secondary materials available on this subject. It is strongly advised that you use the Shapiro Library’s resources to ensure that your references are proper. Secondary materials can be obtained in JSTOR and the “peer-reviewed” publications in the “America: History and Life” database, both of which are available through the Shapiro Library. Make sure the selection for “peer-reviewed” is checked while searching “America: History and Life,” as there are items in the database that do not qualify as secondary sources. If you have any questions regarding a secondary source, please ask your instructor before using it, as is customary.
After you’ve studied a number of primary and secondary sources, something called “critical mass” (a term derived from the “hard sciences”) should occur in your mind. When you’ve done enough study in the sources to let the documents suggest a thesis for your article, you’ve reached “critical mass” in history. Historians don’t start with a thesis and then look for documentation to back up their claims. Historians immerse themselves in the sources and allow them to guide their conclusions. That is the path that knowledge follows: amassing enough data to develop information, then translating that information into knowledge.
Prompt: You will submit your thesis and corollaries once you have completed your study on your topic (i.e., overall claim and claims specific to the cultural, economic, political, and religious contexts). A rough sketch of your supporting evidence, as well as a list of the resources and scholarly references you want to utilize in your work, will be included. Again, it is strongly advised that you utilize the Shapiro Library’s services to ensure that your references are proper. If you like, you may format your contribution using the table below; however, even if you do not, your proposal must include the fundamental elements listed below.
