Description/Paper Instructions
Option #2: Which is more important: citizen privacy or national security?
Create a thesis statement that asks whether citizen privacy or national security is more vital. You have the option of selecting any country or region. Your chosen topic should be specific and answer a question like the ones in the following examples:
Should officials place a higher value on people’ privacy than national security? Why do you think that is?
Is it conceivable that national security will jeopardize citizen privacy? Why do you think that is?
You are free to choose another issue related to the relationship between citizen privacy and national security; just make sure your main thesis discusses the relationship between these two concepts.
Develop at least three good arguments, as well as a counterargument and rebuttal (the counterargument and refutation can be developed with the help of this resource). This structure should result in four body paragraphs. To ensure that the majority of your essay is argumentative, use argumentative subject sentences that incorporate your perspective for each part. “Primarily, exceptional national security is likely to impair citizen privacy because…” may be the start of a topic sentence. Then, back up your claim with a point or two of researched facts, mostly original material that explains how your research backs up your arguments while also providing new insights and viewpoints. Finish each paragraph with a statement that summarizes the key points of the paragraph.
A thesis statement should ideally comprise the essay’s key assignment objectives, which in this case would be your claim/opinion, reasons for having that opinion, and the counterargument: Even if (add argument 1), (add argument 2), and (add argument 3), implementing national security measures may result in citizen privacy issues (add counterargument focus). * Note that, in addition to your own arguments, a full thesis statement will include the counterargument; nevertheless, be sure to frame your counterargument as the opposition’s opinion so that readers do not believe you are shifting your position.
To back up your claims, use at least three credible sources, such as books, articles, and websites (the author should be considered an expert on the topic). In your argumentative research paper, use a combination of cited paraphrases, summaries, and quotes. Use MLA format to construct accurate parenthetical citations and a Works Cited page at the end of your article (Tip: You’ll discover valuable MLA resources within the course topics, particularly in Topic 9) Visit http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/08/ for more Works Cited help, and use the left navigation menu to find the type of reference you need.

This paper should have a counter-argument section that explains what the opposition believes, which is the opposite of the viewpoint you are advocating in your paper. If you’re saying that anti-plagiarism software shouldn’t be used in college classes, for example, the counterargument is that it should. Then, in your refutation, use researched information that is new to the essay to show that the counterargument is false, insignificant, or unimportant (avoid recycling facts from a previous argument in the essay).
This tool will assist you in developing your counter-argument and refutation.
