English Advertising Term Paper Project
Sources:4
Subject: English
Topic: Advertising
Paper details:
Option 1: Argumentative Essay. There are many forms of advertising we encounter daily in today’s world, and there are myriad responses consumers have to those ads. Think of a specific genre of advertising, and consider the following. Is it a harmless vehicle that stimulates commerce, or is it in some way harmful to the people exposed to it?
Does the problem possibly lie somewhere in between: Is it a legitimate tool that is sometimes taken advantage of? How? Why? Your task is to narrow down the focus of this topic to one specific ad or a series of related ads. You can choose to discuss the proliferation of medical advertising over the past ten to fifteen years, the effect that “beauty” ads have on those who are constantly exposed to ultra-beautiful and thin people, the “sneaking in” of ads in movies and how product placement is affecting the industry of film, or any other more narrowed claim about advertising and how it affects the consumers who view these ads.
Parameters: Provide a thesis that states your assertion and support that thesis with detailed examples from external texts used. Make sure not to be too limited nor too broad in your claim. Using various outside sources according to MLA format is required, both from the texts used in class and from outside sources such as LBCC’s online databases. Provide analysis, discussions for why you have used your research and support – how it relates to and supports your claim. Categorize and compare or contrast ideas and observations from outside sources. Include personal insight, any of your own experience with the topic to further develop your paragraphs.
Organize your information effectively so as to prompt easy, concise reading. Provide specific topic sentences at the start of each major unit of information (body paragraph), and make sure each topic sentence directly relates to and supports your thesis. While the topic at hand and the presentation of your argument are primary, do not ignore the mechanics of your writing (grammar and punctuation). Audience: Assume that you are writing for a college publication.
Your audience knows little about the subject at hand aside from the advertisements they are familiar with. Clearly articulate your point of view regarding what these writers have discussed and more importantly what you have learned about the issue at hand. Format: 3-5 pages, typed, double spaced, 12 point font and one inch margins all around. Use black ink. Do not quad space between paragraphs or try to extend the length of your essay with other such trickery.
Include name, date, course number and time in the upper left hand corner of the first page. Put last name and page number in upper right hand margin (1/2 inch down) on successive pages. Create an effective, interesting title. Do not include a cover page or report covers. Staple. Essay Evaluation: Final essay submission should include: 1. the final version of the essay with a works cited page 2. a completed, typed rough draft that shows evidence of significant revision I’ll look for: • Clear, concise presentation of topic (your opinion/argument). • Knowledge of topic at hand. • Effective paragraph development. • Effective introduction and conclusion . • Specific and relevant support from various sources. • Coherent writing and structure appropriate for the college level. • Careful proofreading and editing.
