Research Project – Progress Report ECON 3439/Spring 2020/Ali
Report Instructions
The progress report helps me to see how your work is coming along and help out if you are running into any snags. Presenting your progress report or sharing it with others can also be an opportunity for you to solicit feedback or ideas if you are hitting any roadblocks along the way.
The progress report should include descriptive statistics – these help us to understand the correlation between the dependent variable and the main independent variable. This can be shown by making scatter plots, calculating the mean of the dependent variable, and also by calculating the mean of the dependent variable for different subgroups or regions. Please keep your reports brief and be direct with your language – 1-2 pages, excluding graphs, tables, and references, should be sufficient.
Your progress report should be organized into the following sections:
- Research Question: (1-2 paragraphs). Clearly re-state your research question in one sentence. To help with clarity, please underline your research question. Explain to the reader what is your outcome
(Y) variable and your key explanatory (X) variable. Explain exactly how these variables are measured, and where they come from.
For example, if my X variable is the unemployment rate, available here, then I would note that this variable is the 2019 state-level seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate which measures unemployment within the civilian non-institutional population aged 16 years and older. This variable was collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
You can usually find this type of information in the “Notes” or “Metadata” sections of your data.
- Summary Statistics: (1-3 paragraphs). Here you will present your scatterplot graph, with your outcome variable on the Y axis and your key explanatory variable on the X axis. In one short paragraph, explain what this graph is showing: Do you observe any correlation between the two variables? Are the points very tightly spaced or are they spread out? Are there any obvious outlier points? Is this what you expected to find? Is it different? Why/why not?
In this section you may also present any descriptive statistics that you think are particularly interesting or relevant here (You can create these tables using the sum command in Stata, and paste the tables into your report). Again, write up a brief paragraph explaining to the reader what the statistics mean, are they what you expected to find, are they different, why or why not.
- Next Steps: (1-3 paragraphs). In this section, you should outline what your next steps are – typically you should state that you will run your linear regression model and describe which additional control variables you plan to include. You need to find 3-5 additional explanatory variables that you want to include in your regression. Explain what those variables are here, and what relationship you think they have with your outcome, Y, variable. Just like you did in the “Research Question” section, be as specific as possible with your descriptions of these variables and why you think they are important to
include in your model. If you want to refer to any outside information for why these variables are important, make sure to include both an in-text citation (Author Last Name, Year published) at the end of the sentence where this information is included, and a reference in your References section.
When choosing your explanatory variables, choose variables which you think explain why your outcome variable varies across the different observations (states) that you have. You should try to avoid including explanatory variables which are highly correlated with each other, or which are basically giving us the same information.
For example, if I wanted to run a regression estimating the relationship between watching movies on student’s self-reported well-being, and I also include popcorn consumption as an explanatory variable, if it is the case that students typically consume lots of popcorn while watching movies (i.e. they are complimentary activities), then it is hard for me to interpret what is the effect of movie-watching on wellbeing and what is the effect of popcorn-eating on well-being. So, include one or the other, but not both.
If you have any concerns about what is next or there are issues that you’ve observed, explain those issues here. For example, if you think you have some outlier observations, or you have some variables with missing values, note those here, and how you plan to conduct your regression analysis. Other issues which might come up are if your data do not appear to show any obvious correlation, you might spend some time discussing why this is the case and if including any particular control variables would help you to see a correlation in your key explanatory variable and your outcome variable.
If you have questions or want some feedback from me, try to explain what you would like clearly and briefly.
- References: Use APA format for your references – any outside sources that you use and any data Usually data sources provide a “how to cite our data” section or link. For example, if you are using data from the Kaiser Family Foundation, they have the following outlined on their website:
KFF’s State Health Facts. [Data Source]
The data source may be cited using the reference that appears on each data indicator page
under “Source.”
For example, “KFF’s State Health Facts. Data Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
HIV Surveillance Supplemental Report, Midyear Edition, Vol. 12, No. 1, 2001, “Characteristics of
Persons Living with AIDS at the End of 1999.”
Here are some examples of the APA citation format for most common types of resources that you will be using:

Structure of the Paper (worth 10% of total points) Zero points: Student failed to submit the final paper. 3 points out of 10: Student needs to develop better formatting skills. The paper omits significant structural elements required for and APA 6th edition paper. Formatting of the paper has major flaws. The paper does not conform to APA 6th edition requirements whatsoever. 5 points out of 10: Appearance of final paper demonstrates the student’s limited ability to format the paper. There are significant errors in formatting and/or the total omission of major components of an APA 6th edition paper. They can include the omission of the cover page, abstract, and page numbers. Additionally the page has major formatting issues with spacing or paragraph formation. Font size might not conform to size requirements. The student also significantly writes too large or too short of and paper 7 points out of 10: Research paper presents an above-average use of formatting skills. The paper has slight errors within the paper. This can include small errors or omissions with the cover page, abstract, page number, and headers. There could be also slight formatting issues with the document spacing or the font Additionally the paper might slightly exceed or undershoot the specific number of required written pages for the assignment. 10 points: Student provides a high-caliber, formatted paper. This includes an APA 6th edition cover page, abstract, page number, headers and is double spaced in 12’ Times Roman Font. Additionally, the paper conforms to the specific number of required written pages and neither goes over or under the specified length of the paper.
