The readings assigned from the latter half of last week and the beginning of this one are designed to generate discussions on social issues affecting American society. How do you see America continuing to change and develop? Do you find that the American society still engenders the idea of equality and opportunity for all, or is there a distinct change in that ideal? How do you see America continuing to progress? What do you think of the issues of technology; of racial, gender, and income inequality; and how must America address these issues in order to continue to be a leader in the world?Note that in your second paper, you will review a social issue to write about, developing a response to a particular quandary or problem. In class, we will read essays on the issues of how technology is changing society, gender inequality and social constructs of presumed/expected behaviors for men and women, the changes in the economy, and immigration, the changing American dream. Consider as you read these essays how these changes are affecting the country.
That’s a lot to ponder! – However, on this final essay, you will hone in on just one social issue from that smorgasbord of reading. There are four basic areas to choose from:
Length Requirement: 5 full pages at the minimum7 pages maximum
Sources Required: Four fully accredited previously published works {no non-authoritative websites or blogs} [You may reference one of the articles from the TSIS text as one of the required four sources.]
You will compile a citation list in proper MLA format and provide a full summary and evaluation of each of the sources you have chosen. A complete description of this assignment is provided in your weekly lesson folder.

Immigration and the challenges of a heterogeneous society
Technology’s effect on the economy/workers
Women’s Issues .
Apply the templates learned in ch. 4 of the TSIS Reader for responding to a text
Demonstrate understanding of the key terms of a social issue, as learned in the reading
Demonstrate and apply the use of one of the two models of Argument as described below [either the Classical or Rogerian Argument]
Develop a full five to seven page paper applying the parts of the model
Remember and apply strong organizational and grammatical skill
Evaluate evidence and sources to provide backing for your arguments
Use proper MLA format to document all sources used for backing in the paper
For the second essay, you will structure an argument on one of the casebooks we have been studying. Ideally, you will choose a social issue that relates to the field of study you are interested in or to your life in some way. Select from one of these chapters from your TSIS Reader and read all of the essays assigned on that topic. {Consult your syllabus for clarification on the pages, or check the index of your book}. Take some time to consider what you have read and to think about your own beliefs and ideas about this issue. What claim are you prepared to assert? Will you agree on the issue, disagree, or agree with differences? Jot that down to begin your research.Once you have established this claim, begin your research. I strongly suggest that you adhere to the following process:
First, consider checking the Thomas Legislative Page at http://thomas.loc.gov/ to see what current legislation is on the books concerning the topic you have selected. Is there any pending legislation? What modifications to the current status are being proposed? Educate yourself thoroughly on the governments stance on the issue.
Next, consult the library databases, such as NC Live and Sirs [see library link provided in the Essays Menu Link]. Look for strong contemporary {within the last three years} articles that support your assertion. Search the library online catalog for books on your topic {*the Opposing Viewpoints Series is particularly good for collections of information on your topic}. You may use one of the sources from your TSIS textbook.
Remember that reference works will not be counted as one of the four required sources for essay two. You may find the need to consult a specialized dictionary or encyclopedia, but that is not considered backing for your grounds. Also, please refrain from citing any non-authoritative or edited websites online, such as Wikipedia. If you have any questions about a source that you think you would like to use, clear it with me prior to developing the annotated bibliography.The paper itself will be organized around a claim, for which you will provide clear reasons for your position. You will follow the steps for organizing your position according to the guidelines presented on pages 456-57 of your text. Review the goals of the the Classical or Rogerian Approach as provided above. Basically, you will:
Establish a problem
Respect opposing views and allow for plural truths
Seek to achieve some degree of assent, or common ground, on the issue.
Remember your paper should be five pages minimum and NO MORE than seven pages. Be sure that you cite all four* works {one of which can be from the TSIS Reader} in proper MLA or APA format on a final works cited page.Structure of the Paper.

Your essay will be graded according to the following criteria:I. The essay is clear and logical, using strong evidence to support the overall position with arguments that contain no bias or fallacy, meeting goals #1 and #2 of the assignment.–20 points
II. The essay is organized successfully, asserting a clear proposal, supported by reasons that are clearly articulated with enough source evidence to support the foundation, meeting goals #3 and #4 of the assignment — 30 points
III. The essay is structured in formal, college-level prose with no major errors in grammatical structure or usage. The word choices are logical and clear. No 1st or 2nd person [or other vague pronouns] have been used, meeting goal #5 — 20 points
IV. The sources are accredited and appropriate for scholastic use, meeting goal #6 15 points
V. The essay is formatted properly with correct margins, spacing, and headers, and all sources have been integrated successfully in the paper. All quotes within the essay, both direct and paraphrased, are cited properly and provide clear reference to a citation on the works cited page. Also, all works cited on the citation page are quoted within the essay, meeting goal #7 15 points
