Discussion Paper on World Cultures No. 2
Each week, we’ll focus on a specific time period in our history. Despite the fact that these are our forefathers, it will appear as if we are studying a faraway planet populated by people who have the oddest of behaviors. Fortunately, the people we’re watching provide us a lot of information about themselves. Their writing, art, and technology, as well as the way they conduct business and govern themselves, all contribute to a picture we’ll try to build for ourselves each week. Knowing who they were will assist us to know who we are.
Every week, you’ll be given three or four questions based on the materials provided in the question, the textbook, the lectures, the additional materials offered, and my remarks in my Live Session. You pick one and respond with a 125-word or longer response. You must also respond to another post made by one of your classmates. This second post should be at least 60 words long and not simply agree or rehash what has already been expressed.
Please provide an example that has not been discussed previously.
1. Impressionist painters aimed to capture the emotive and direct nature of the world they experienced. In their art, Russian realist painters attempted to maintain national traditions and ways of life. Both artists contributed to their countries’ cultures by portraying the world around them in their paintings, which often depicted an idealized image of it. Compare and contrast the contributions of one Impressionist and one Realist painter to the identities of their respective countries. What vital aspect of their national identity did their art define? There are numerous excellent examples in Chapter 31.
2. What does the Crystal Palace teach us about Britain at the end of the nineteenth century in terms of technology, economy, and society?
3. What was Edgar Degas’s take on women in his paintings? What role did women play in Mary Cassatt’s art? Compare and contrast the two visions of women by citing specific examples of the roles these artists saw women playing at the time. There are some excellent instances in Chapter 32.
4. George Catlin’s artwork was beautiful, but so were the many works created by the various Native American art traditions described in Chapter 32. Compare and contrast Catlin’s work with one of those artistic traditions, as well as the results. Please be detailed with your examples.
5. With the Columbian Exhibition of 1893, America built its own Crystal Palace. What exactly was the point of this exhibition? What image of America does this show portray?
6. Your book includes a brief but informative section on the origins of jazz. Jazz is an art form that is unique to the United States. What did it say about America at the time it was created? What image of our country did this incredibly creative art form conjure up? Why did jazz emerge at a time when there was so much else going on in America? What does jazz mean to America today?
How to Use Discussion Boards to Improve Your Grade
With the first week of Discussion Boards ahead of us, it’s a good idea to take a breather and reflect before continuing. You are doing yourself a disservice if you only look at the score and then move on. To avoid the same thing happening week after week, read the feedback and consider why you lost points.
Here are a few common blunders to stay away from:
I don’t write enough. This is a class on writing. You must read and listen to the materials, analyze them, and write a clear response that covers the topic and responds to the questions. Because these are not short-answer questions, use complete sentences. You might need to do a bit of extra research.
Cite your sources at the end of the initial post. Never cut-and-paste materials from sources. We want to see your thoughts and not those of others. If you summarize someone elses thoughts or you use a direct quote, cite them. With assignments of this length, do not use long quotes. A short phrase is the maximum.
If your response to your classmates is Great post! I agree with you! are all you write, then you will not get points. Read their posts and find something they say that you can comment on. You can agree or disagree but provide evidence to prove your claims. The length here is important as well. Say something interesting that relates to the subject. Again, if you use outside sources, cite them.
Make sure your comments are organized, relate to the subject and make sense.
Check grammar, spelling, sentence structure, etc. As a college student, mistakes in these areas should not be present in your writing. When they are present, go back and review and learn why you made the mistake, so that you will not make them next time.
When you have completed your post, before you post it, re-read and edit it. You send your best work to be graded. Grading should not be an editing service, but a confirmation of your hard work. You are not done and should not post until you have edited your work for errors.
As a southerner, I often tell myself
Self, you cannot write the way you speak. Use your formal voice, with correct grammar and diction. To be honest, I was born a redneck, but I work hard to keep it under wraps in my writing. Writing well will become one of the greatest skills you can develop, but it takes constant work.
Try to check and respond to your classmates throughout the week. Read my responses to your classmates as well. You will find that the give and take of the responses will add much to your understanding.
Hopefully, these thoughts will help. Go through this process each week after grades are posted. It is always about continual improvement. I often say that for any of us, there is no finish line in writing. We will work to improve throughout our lives. Dr. Mike

The answer is complete. 50 points: The essay illustrates exemplary understanding of the relevant material by thoroughly and correctly addressing the relevant content; identifying and explaining all of the key concepts/ideas; using correct terminology explaining the reasoning behind key points/claims and substantiating, as necessary/useful, points with several accurate and illuminating examples. No aspects of the required answer are missing. Use of Sources (worth a maximum of 20% of the total points). Zero points: Student failed to include citations and/or references. Or the student failed to submit a final paper. 5 out 20 points: Sources are seldom cited to support statements and/or format of citations are not recognizable as APA 6th Edition format. There are major errors in the formation of the references and citations. And/or there is a major reliance on highly questionable.
