Module 1 delves deeply into the tenets of conventional agriculture that pose a threat to long-term viability. Please explore the following questions for our discussion: What is the most important issue to you in terms of agricultural sustainability? There is no such thing as a correct answer. I’d like to know which of the topics covered in the text and video presentations are most significant to you and why.
To choose your topic, consult primary and/or popular literature (make excellent selections here, guys!). Then look at specific areas of study or innovation that could lead to more sustainable agricultural options in the future. To get you started, here are some recommended readings. These two articles, written by the same primary author, contain similar material in different formats from various sorts of publications.
This article is considered primary literature because it was published in the magazine Nature. For more information, the following materials have been added:
Foley, J. A., et al. (2011). Solutions for a cultivated planet. Nature. 478, 337–342. (pdf)
Supplementary figures, methods, table and additional references. (Links to an external site.) (pdf)
The second image is from a recent National Geographic magazine. Although it is a well-regarded book, it is classified as a “popular” source since it lacks the boundaries of primary literature (most notably, it is not subjected to the peer review process). To keep the file size down, the majority of the images were eliminated.
Foley, J. A. (2014). A five step plan to feed the world. National Geographic, 225 (5), 27 – 47. (pdf)
Remember that an environmental problem is a complicated topic with numerous aspects that are always changing. The variables’ associations are shifting as well. Some factors are beyond of our control. Environmental issues are viewed from an ecological, social, and economic standpoint. Despite the difficulty of reaching broad consensus, we must make judgments in order to discover solutions.
Your response should be meaningful and include external sources of information such as the internet or primary literature. That source should be cited directly with an in-text citation (author, year), and your post should include a bibliography with APA-formatted citations for the outside sources you used. Every post intended at your peers must also include a question. This offers them something to think about for the coming week.
