Write a two- to three-page essay. The essay is about a discourse community, and you must explain what makes this discourse community a community. To begin, go over the handout “Discourse Community and Culture” and determine which communities you belong to on a personal, geographical, intellectual, and societal level. Another option is to come up with a daily activity that you can do with others, such as studying, taking the bus, or working out. A community can be defined by a verb or activity, as the Fleet Feet blog demonstrates (i.e., running). Please do not write about an online community for this first assignment. Finally, your project thesis must include an iteration of the following phrase: is a community.
In essay form, your essay should respond to the following questions. Rather than answering each question individually, your task is to construct a cohesive essay that addresses all of them while also supporting your thesis:
What distinguishes this group as a community? What is it that binds the group together?
What do these folks have in common in terms of interests, needs, and values?
What tensions or differences are preventing this community’s cohesion?
How do you think you’ll fit in with this group?
What makes this a community you’d like to be a part of?
What impact does belonging to this discourse community have on your life? (For example, how does it contribute to a meaningful and worthwhile life?)
The goal of this project is to enhance your understanding of discourse community by looking beyond the apparent manifestations of culture within a discourse community to include the implicit aspects as well. (2) Consider how belonging to a discourse community adds to a meaningful and worthwhile existence. (3) Provide you with the opportunity to develop a definitional argument to reinforce your rhetorical expertise (you may remember this from ENG 1252). (5) Lay the groundwork for primary research methods.
