Discussion: Cultural Differences and Communication
The deeper your understanding of the cultural context within which you are communicating, the more effective you—and your communication—will be. In this Discussion, you will choose two countries of interest to you and compare the cultures of these countries across important cultural dimensions. You will then analyze how these differences and similarities might impact communication between individuals from each of the countries and propose tips for ensuring shared understanding.
To prepare for this Discussion:
- Visit the following resource and select two countries to compare using Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. They can be countries in which you are interested, countries where you have lived or visited, countries that represent your ancestry, or simply countries with which you are most familiar. The only requirement is to select two different countries for this Discussion.

BY DAY 3
Post a comparison of the cultural dimensions of the two countries you have chosen, being sure to include the following:
- Identify three specific insights from the countries’ scores on the six dimensions outlined. These may include ways in which the countries are different on the dimension or things they have in common.
- Analyze how each of these insights might make effective communication either easier or more difficult between individuals from each of the countries.
- Propose at least one specific suggestion related to each insight that you would provide to someone from one of the countries you chose when communicating with someone from the second country you chose.
Refer to the Week 2 Discussion Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this grading rubric to assess your work.

- Provide at least two additional suggestions (beyond those provided in your colleague’s posting) for effective communication between individuals from the two countries your colleague posted, and be sure to provide a rationale for your ideas.
- Highlight at least one significant difference between the cultural dimensions of one of the countries chosen by your colleague and one of the countries you chose and provide an example of how you might communicate the same message differently between those two countries.
- Share an insight you gained from your colleague’s analysis, including how this insight will help you be a more effective communicator, manager, leader, and/or agent of positive social change.
Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned or any insights you have gained as a result of the comments your colleagues made.
