Course title: Critical Thinking
Date: 20, August, 2030**READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS VERY CAREFULLY**
Your responses will be based upon the attached article “One Nation Under God”
Parts 1, 2, 3, & 4 graded on a 50 pt. basis for each part.
Total possible points = 200Ok. We’re ready to rock and roll. At this point you should be ready to type a 3 to 4 page essay incorporating all of the material presented so far in evaluating an argument. Use MLA formatting (1 inch margins, double spaced, headings aligned left-margin (name, instructor’s name, course title, date formatted as date-month-year), last name and page numbers aligned right-margin headers on each page except the first). The best method for approaching this essay is to divide it into four parts:
In the first paragraph introduce the author and topic of his essay. Identify the purpose behind the essay and the conclusion of the author concerning the subject.
In the second paragraph briefly summarize the article, identifying each of the author’s premises in arriving at his conclusion.
In the third and possibly fourth and fifth paragraphs, discuss the validity of each premise. This will be the meat of your essay in which you explore:
Biases
Emotionally charged language
Overgeneralizations
Ambiguous statements
Opinions stated as facts
Stereotyping
Ethnocentrism
Appeals to tradition
Types of evidence used as premises for the conclusion
Non-literal language (metaphors or analogies)
Consequences (use your imagination to present possible negative or positive consequences if the author’s conclusion is to be taken seriously)
In your last paragraph I’d like you to express your opinion as to whether the author of the essay presents a rational, convincing argument; one with a conclusion that should be put into effect. Be sure to give me specific reasons for this opinion.
NOW:
Read the article at least three times before you begin to think about organizing your essay.Follow the steps I’ve outlined for you below:
The first reading should be a quick scan of the article just to get a feel for the author’s writing style and attitude.
The second reading should be more deliberate; identify the author’s purpose and conclusion; underline the premises the author uses to arrive at his conclusion.
In the third reading, analyze each premise as to a-k above. Be sure to include premises that have no bearing on the conclusion whatsoever, showing how they detract from the logic of the argument.
Write your first draft. Don’t worry about spelling, grammar, punctuation etc. Just get your thoughts down as logically as possible.
Second draft: Read your first draft out loud. Every time you stumble or hesitate in your reading means there’s probably an error in punctuation, grammar, spelling, or sentence structure. Fix them.
Type a second draft.
Give your final draft to a knowledgeable person who will read and offer suggestions for improving your essay.
Write the final draft.
