Description/Paper Instructions: connection between COVID-19 and sustainability
Essay 3 (1500-2500 words)
Assignment Introduction
Essay 3 requires you to locate and evaluate authoritative sources to support your argument. The essay’s instructions asks you to cite at least three sources that are academic sources, government publications, or grey literature (depending on your topic, these three may be other sources if approved by me before the draft is due). In this assignment, I’d like you to evaluate one of those types of sources that you might cite in your essay.
Assignment Guidelines
To complete this assignment, post a correct MLA works cited entry for one source that is an academic source, a government publication, or an example of grey literature that you might use in your essay.

PURPOSE This assignment allows you to demonstrate the ability to propose research questions, to locate relevant texts through research, to select relevant supporting evidence from research sources, and to write a sustained persuasive argument to a neutral or skeptical audience who might not initially agree with you about important issues related to sustainability.
OBJECTIVE Compose and proofread a persuasive essay composed of 1500-2500 words, formatting your essay using MLA style guidelines (use 12-point Times New Roman font).
connection between COVID-19 and sustainability
Your essay should synthesize and cite at least eight different sources that you locate through independent research, at least three of which must be academic sources, government publications, or grey literature (depending on your topic, these three may be other sources if approved by me before the draft is due). You may also use sources that I have provided from our textbook, handouts, or links, but they will not count as sources you locate through your own research.
NOTE: The research sources you synthesize should demonstrate your ability to select and evaluate appropriate research sources for college-level work. Do not cite reference works such as Wikipedia, dictionaries, or encyclopedias. You can consult such sources to help yourself understand a topic, but even specialized dictionaries and encyclopedias contain common knowledge in a given field and should not be cited as college-level research.
TOPIC: research and write about COVID-19, you will develop research questions and conduct further research to answer those questions. I’ll place you in research groups to help with developing your ideas. Your essay should synthesize research sources and make an original argument that relates COVID-19 to sustainability.
Write a persuasive essay supported by substantial college-level research that makes some connection between COVID-19 and sustainability. (Keep in mind that your purpose is to convince a skeptical audience to consider the importance and validity of your argument.)
PRE-WRITING TASKS Plan your essay by doing the following: • Develop preliminary research questions based on your interest in COVID-19.
- Conduct preliminary research to learn more about the topic. In this preliminary research you should discover what others have written about your topic. How and why do people disagree about it? What are the connections between sustainability and COVID-19? • Consider how COVID-19 relates to the three pillars of sustainability. How is this an issue that relates to the environment, to economics, and to social justice? • Consider how you can suggest synergistic satisfiers to replace or augment current destroyers and pseudo-satisfiers related to your research topic. • Start to develop a preliminary thesis.
WRITING TASKS As you draft, keep the following in mind: • The introduction should provide background information. Assume your readers are aware of the concept of sustainability but that they may not have considered how COVID-19 and sustainability are related. • The essay should have a thesis that makes an original argument which related COVID-19 and sustainability. • Body paragraphs should generally start with topic sentences that support the thesis of the essay.
A topic sentence at the beginning of each paragraph should indicate the topic of its paragraph. Body paragraphs should be focused, developed, organized, coherent, and unified. Avoid trying to write a 5-paragraph essay. Your argument and use of researched evidence should be sophisticated enough to require more than an introduction, a conclusion, and 3 body paragraphs.
• Body paragraphs should transition smoothly from one to the next. Make sure transitions help your audience understand the logical reasons the essay moves from one topic to the next. • The essay should provide specific researched evidence to support your essay’s thesis. Use quotations and paraphrases appropriately from a variety of research sources. • Research sources that you quote or paraphrase should be cited using MLA in-text citations and should be included in a works cited list (see the information on MLA citation style on Canvas).
You may use sources we have read for class, but you are also required to quote or paraphrase in the body of the essay at least eight other research sources that you find through independent research, at least three of which must be academic sources, government publications, or grey literature (depending on your topic, these three may be other sources if approved by me before the draft is due).
