Compare and contrast the use of setting in two different stories.
Compare and contrast the use of setting in any two stories assigned in Module 1 in an essay. You can contrast the treatment of different kinds of settings or compare the re-creation of two similar settings, such as faraway landscapes, foreign cities, or suffocating suburbs. Consider how the authors use setting to shape plot, point of view, and character, as well as the authors’ descriptive techniques.
Write an essay comparing how the traditional plot elements of exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and conclusion are handled in any two of the stories assigned in Module 1. Take into account how plot elements affect the overall artistic effect.
Write an essay that focuses on the central conflict in one of the Module 1 stories. What is the conflict’s nature? As the story progresses, when, where, and how does it develop or become more complicated? What happens at the end of the story? What makes that resolution satisfying, and how does it do so?
Within 500-800 words, fully respond to the prompt.
The structure of an essay must be correct. An introduction paragraph, at least three body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph are all required. The page number, heading, and title in MLA format must all appear on the first page of the essay. The introduction should start with a hook/attention grabber, then move on to general background information on the topic, and finally, the ONE SENTENCE thesis should be the LAST sentence.
To support your thesis, use your own ideas as well as quotes from the literature. Remember to start each quote with a signal phrase and end each quote with an interpretation in your own words when using quotations (review the quote sandwich). There are no secondary sources to be used. The only source that has been approved is your textbook.
Following each quotation and/or paraphrase, use MLA parenthetical citations. Please refer to Chapter 34 of the textbook for more information.
