College Student Engagement Essay Assignment
Description / paper instructions
Introduction: write a brief introduction where you describe the area of engagement difficulty you focused on, leading to a main point that states what you discovered about your area—why it’s such a problem for students and what you realized is important in trying to solve it.
1st body section (showing the problem exists): after the introduction, make a sub-point that relates to your main point, showing that the problem exists for you and your fellow students (for example: Many students, myself included, have a hard time deciding on an appropriate major.) To illustrate your sub-point, use the appropriate survey results, give a vivid personal example and show from one of the readings that other students have this problem too.
2nd body section (explaining interesting research on the psychology behind the problem): after you show the problem exists within you and other students, explain the interesting research you found that sheds new light on the issue. For your sub-point for this section, follow the template of: I used to think A (something obvious about my issue), but after reading X, now I think B (something more interesting about my issue).?To illustrate your sub-point, paraphrase, quote and analyze the research you read.
3rd body section (applying the research to solve your problem and describing the thinking behind your team engagement project): after you explain the psychology of why students have this problem, apply the research to yourself. Start the section with a transition from the last section and move to your sub-point by answering the question—After researching and thinking about your problem, what did you realize about how you had to change your behavior? (Try to have a theme here to focus the section around. What was your logic in how you created your engagement plan?)
To illustrate your sub-point, explain what the logic was behind your new activities; what you planned to do differently for the two weeks of your team’s engagement project;and why you thought they would work.
