Although problematic art is not a topic unique to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the growth of media has increased the availability of knowledge about controversial art. Choose a contentious work of art from any discipline of the humanities from the twentieth or twenty-first centuries (music, literature, sculpture, film, television, etc.). After that, take care of the following:
Identify the piece as well as the medium in which it was created.
To what extent does this contentious work of art contribute to society, based on your example?
What is the work’s aesthetic value? What does it say about the state of humanity? What does it have to do with your life?
Is this work censored in any way? If this is the case, please explain the situation.
Is it ever justified for governments to ban art? Why do you think that is?
Examine some of this work of art’s influences.
Discuss whether or not this piece qualifies as art. Using terms acquired in this course, explain why.
To bolster your arguments, provide a statement from the artist(s) and a statement from a critic.
