So all research has to be paraphrased and cited. I have decided to write the paper on the relationship between abnormalities in the brain and how that translates to psychopathy. I have already come up with an introduction and a thesis so please follow the outline provided for you. I have also went ahead and written the first paragraph. I will be uploading the first page of this essay that I have done so far and you can copy and paste that onto your document and continue writing from there. Please feel free to ask any questions, thank you 🙂 Notes: I have also left some cool information in the document I will be uploading in case you want to use it in the last paragraph as a part of “treatment methods”. It is highlighted in pink and it needs to be paraphrased and cited. (The website is under) Also, don’t worry about the citation “Santana” I have already made in my work, I will fix that and add it to the reference page once you have finished. Lastly, I have put in the description for this assignment that I’m requiring 4 pages but that is only because I am providing the first page for you. The final product has to be 5 pages not including the cover or reference page. Understanding the makeup of a psychopath can be intense, as they are known to lead very complex lives. Psychopathy is a personality disorder that is characterized by a lack of remorse, antisocial behavior and egotistical traits. Psychologists have narrowed its cause down to nature and nurture. It is possible that the behavior is a cause of the person’s genetic makeup, or there was some type of trauma during their upbringing that triggered the abnormal growth of their brain. This paper will discuss the genetic component of a psychopath’s brain, the relationship between trauma and psychopathy, the traits that a psychopath possesses, and possible treatment for their disorder. Most psychopaths are born with significant differences in their brain that can prevent them from exhibiting normal and healthy behavior. Their abnormalities affect many different parts of the brain rather than the brain as a whole. Studies have repeatedly reported abnormalities in the prefrontal, limbic, temporal, and subcortical areas of the brain as compared to healthy controls. (Santana). To be more specific, research has found that psychopaths possessed lower volumes of gray matter in sections of the brain that deal with the following behaviors: empathy, moral reasoning, and the processing of social emotions including guilt and embarrassment. MRI’s have shown smaller volumes in the orbitofrontal cortex, prefrontal cortex, temporal lobe, insula, amygdala, and hippocampus (Santana). All of the mentioned areas of the brain are crucial in decision making and emotional processing, which is why individuals with psychopathy have trouble integrating mirror neurons in their reasoning. Interestingly, removal of the anterior temporal lobe appears to alleviate these behavioral problems in the majority of cases. Hill and colleagues (1957) reported that improvements in personality functioning following temporal lobectomy include reduced hostility and violence, more appropriate sexual behavior (e.g., reduced use of prostitutes and sexual fetishes), increased warmth in social relationships, and increased empathy (see also Hood et al., 1983). Note that removal of the anterior temporal lobe reduced the psychopathic symptoms, suggesting that these behaviors might reflect pathological activity or disruption in the circuits that involve the anterior temporal lobes.
