You must prepare a 5-page research paper (double-spaced, standard tabs) about a musical culture not covered in this course. India, Indonesia, Japan, the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean are among the countries covered in this course; however, you may choose any other country in the world. Native America, Polynesia, Australia, China, Korea, Ireland, Portugal, Greece, and the Arctic Circle are some areas to consider…. As long as it isn’t covered in our course, you can go wherever you want.
Please use Nettl’s 3-part approach for this project, which is discussed in “Unit 1: Introduction” and Chapter 1 of our textbook. Concentrate on the Sounds, Behaviors, and Ideas or Concepts that regulate the sounds and behaviors of the musical genre or activity you select. It’s preferable if you keep this study report to a single genre or ensemble from whatever region you choose. If you were to write about Spanish music, for example, don’t try to explain all Spanish music (it’s too wide, too big), but instead focus on a specific genre or activity, such as Flamenco. Do you want to learn more about Hawaiian music? Use just hula hoops or string bands. The idea is to concentrate on a single genre or activity from an area and provide in-depth information rather than a wide, superficial cultural overview.
Sound:
What are the sounds you’re hearing? Discuss the musical genre’s (and activity’s) instruments (and voices). What do they look like and how do they sound? Are there any limits or limitations on who can play these instruments or when they can be played? Can you comment on the music’s texture and form? Layers of activity are referred to as texture. What is the number of musicians present, and how do they interact with one another? The way the music is organized and presented is referred to as form. What is the duration of a performance and how are the melodies and rhythms organized? Finally, as an outsider, how does the music sound to you?
Behaviors:
What kinds of activities are linked to this musical genre or activity? What are people doing when this musical performance is taking place? Is there a definite reason or function for this music, or is it just for fun and entertainment? Is there any kind of religious, age, or gender restriction in this musical activity? Is everyone in on it together, or are the musicians/singers/dancers performing for an audience? why? Finally, are there any parallels between musical actions in your life or culture?
Ideas/Conceptions:
What concepts or ideals guide the sounds and behaviors of your chosen musical genre or activity? Why are people making this music and why are they listening to it? Discuss concepts such as history, culture, and musical growth. Almost every musical genre in the world expresses both local and foreign, or outsider, elements. What characteristics are distinctively regional or indigenous, and what characteristics are the result of foreign influences, and why? Almost all music contains a mix of the two! How has this musical genre/activity been influenced by politics, religion, or human migration? Finally, can you apply what you’ve learned to your own life?
