The biology principles given in this course inspire you to connect textbook biology with biology found in newspapers, periodicals, and on the Internet. This Biology in the News (BITN) project allows you to concentrate on the relationship between your textbook and the world you live in, as well as how science and technology impact and contribute to current culture.
Choose an item from a recent newspaper, periodical, or the Internet that connects to the content of one or more of the course’s principles of instruction. Choose an article that is intended for a general audience. Scientific publications should be avoided.
Select an article that satisfies the following criteria:
in relation to the topic of a lesson
Not just an announcement and not ten pages, but something in between. Three pages are required.
It’s been less than three months since it was born.
Not an encyclopedia reference, but current news.
Not an academic scientific publication, but written for the general audience.
There should be three parts to your BITN paper:
In the upper right corner of the title page, you’ll find the date, your name, course, section, and instructor name. The article’s title should be in the center of the page. Place the article reference citation at the bottom of the page.
Three nicely crafted paragraphs will make up the body of the essay. A minimum of four sentences should be included in each paragraph.
First paragraph: Summarize the article’s who, what, when, where, why, and how.
Paragraph two: Connect the content of the article to a topic taught in a course lesson. Describe how the textbook aided your comprehension of the article. Did the article support or refute the textbook?
Third paragraph: Express your thoughts on the article’s substance. Explain how the article’s content affects you, your family, and your friends. Answer two or more of the following questions to relate the article’s content to real life:
Was there anything in the article that you hadn’t considered before?
Has the article swayed your opinion on the subject?
Was the topic of the post something you’ve personally experienced?
Was there any discussion of ethical or public policy issues in the article?
Do you agree with or disagree with the material in your article?
A copy of the article should be included to your paper.
This task is worth 20 points. Half credit will be given for late work. The following are the ways to acquire points:
Citation, Format, and Presentation (4 points)
The cover sheet includes the following information:
Name, course number, section number, date, and instructor’s name
Title of the article
Citation of an article using a standard format such as APA or MLA.
There are three paragraphs:
Each paragraph should have a minimum of four sentences.
The material of this article refers to a lesson that was taught in class.
A copy of the article should be included to the BITN assignment:
This article is only three months old.
This is a news article, not a reference piece.
Written Communication Skills that are Accurate (4 points)
Cohesive paragraphs with proper sentence structure, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and scientific terminology are included in the assignment.
Paragraphs should be written in your own words based on the article and textbook knowledge. It is forbidden to copy any section of the article, textbook, or other source.
