Assignment for CMIT 495 Cloud Computing
Week 2 of the course focuses on cloud computing.
1. Take a screenshot of the AWS Management Console (Dashboard) and embed it below after logging into your freshly formed AWS account. The username you created during setup should be included in the screenshot.
2. Get a Windows Virtual Machine up and running (VM). Give a step-by-step breakdown of how to install the Microsoft Windows operating system on the virtual machine. The steps might be written in bullet points or in whole sentences. Use as much room as you need. Finally, take a screenshot of your desktop and paste it into the text box below.
3. Using what you learnt in Project 1, create a new AWS EC2 Ubuntu Linux Server and connect to it using SSH.
4. Using Amazon Elastic File Systems (EFS), create a network file system and attach it to the running Ubuntu Server AWS instance. Step-by-step instructions can be found on the AWS Use Cases website. Take a snapshot of the outcome and paste it in the box below. Take screenshots of both the results of mounting your file system and the results of producing a test file in your new file system by using the dd command to build a 1GiB file in your new directory. Finally, explain what a network file system is good for.
5. Create an S3 bucket with AWS and upload a file to it. Step-by-step instructions can be found on the AWS Use Cases website. Take a screenshot to demonstrate that the file was successfully uploaded to the S3 bucket. Both screenshots are embedded below.
6. This paper will be reviewed by the CTO. You’ve demonstrated how simple it is to use AWS to provision a Microsoft operating system. AWS was chosen by the CTO because it provided a free account. She will now look to you for advice on which cloud service to utilize for the organization’s PaaS (e.g., operating system) requirements. Because a private cloud isn’t required, the public option will suffice. Explain how the Google Cloud Platform, Amazon AWS, and Microsoft Azure differ. Make a suggestion to the CTO about which service provider to use and why. Make your recommendation explicit and detailed.
7. The CTO praised the comparison you made between cloud service providers (Amazon, Google, and Microsoft). She has made the decision to use an Amazon Virtual Private Cloud. The Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) allows you to deploy AWS resources into a defined virtual network. This virtual network closely matches a typical network you’d run in your own data center, but with the added benefit of AWS’s scalable infrastructure.
a. To begin, the CEO would like you to supply the following network settings for provisioning two (2) subnets (Note: Default subnets use /20 CIDRs under the default VPC CIDR):

8. Verify that your Microsoft Windows virtual machine has been stopped and terminated, that you have removed your file system via the Amazon EFS dashboard, that you have deleted the contents of your Amazon S3 bucket, and that you have deleted your Amazon S3 bucket. Simply write your name in the box below to confirm.
