Topic: Analysis of Political or Gendered Discourse
Paper details:consider the relationship between discourse and medium, keep in mind the overall theme of the course: language and power.
World leaders, politicians, and pundits now use Twitter and Facebook to disseminate their ideas and reach their followers. These mediums require that an author release snippets of information using the least amount of language, yet this language has a great impact psychologically and emotionally. In addition to social media platforms, blogs allow the everyday person to express ideas, interests, or advice to any number of followers.Blogs are often multi-modal, meaning that written discourse is often paired with visual images, creating an overall impact. Consider also that most people source their news through the internet, rather than through physical newspapers and magazines. In the virtual environment, we have the ability to click through articles, images, and feeds rapidly. Only the most intriguing discourse captures our attention. Therefore, the question you will be considering this week is how discourse is mediated by technology, in particular virtual environments. How is discourse shaped by the medium in which it is conveyed, and how does discourse help to shape the development of new media?
Review the following: Why Do News Values Matter? Towards a New Methodological Framework for Analysing News Discourse in Critical Discourse Analysis and Beyond, Language of Politics—Noam Chomsky (Links to an external site.), and Professor Lakoff, Metaphors We Live By (Links to an external site.). You may also want to review some of the required and recommended resources that have been collecting and analyzing samples of political or gendered discourse.
Choose a public speech, news story, or opinion article on a trending topic of interest to you. It is recommended that you spend some time reviewing the discourse sample you have chosen. Consider the theories of discourse analysis studied so far in this course and how they might be applied to the discourse to better understand the author’s intention, the work’s meaning, and possible interpretations by readers. For this assignment, you will submit a formal outline. Your outline will include a tentative thesis statement that asserts how language is used to convey a particular social message or agenda.
