I understand constructivism as learners actively constructing their own knowledge. This refers to learners being completely hands-on with their learning. According to McLeod (2019), constructivism consists of a participatory approach in which students participate actively in the learning process. I believe the construction of learning relies heavily on the learner’s personal experiences and interactions with others. Active learning is not innate and it requires one to make connections between prior knowledge, new knowledge, and the processes involved in learning (McLeod, 2019).
There are a variety of instructional methods that support this approach. To start, teachers must provide an environment that promotes collaboration between students, where they interact with one another and put problem-solving skills to use. The teacher must also make it a priority to identify each individual student’s abilities and tailor activities to these individual needs, in a way that allows the learner to build upon their current knowledge. I believe that scaffolding plays an important part here. The teacher must consistently assess learning and modify the level of help that is being provided to the learner. Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development and the More Knowledge Other are key components when utilizing scaffolding in the classroom (McLeod, 2019). Most importantly, in active learning, the teacher must act as the facilitator, not the instructor.
From my experience as a teacher, centers, or stations, is a perfect way to encourage students to be active learners. This type of learning involves students working together in small groups (collaboration), learning activities are able to be differentiated and scaffolded, in order to best meet the individual needs of each child, and the teacher is the facilitator, monitoring students as they work and ensuring learning is happening appropriately, while students act as the instructor in completing the tasks at each center.
This approach supports the developmental needs of young children because it allows them the chance to identify and utilize the way in which they learn best. Constructivism also promotes a student centered learning environment. With this, students are able to learn how to have a voice and take ownership of their learning. Additionally, this approach helps young children develop, improve, and build upon social and emotional skills. With active learning requiring collaboration, young learners learn to work together with others and put self-regulation skills to use, as they navigate working with others who may or may not have similar knowledge and abilities.
