Thought Paper: The Mask You Live In
- An introductory paragraph about the documentary.
The film, The Mask You Live In is about boys and young men who struggle to express themselves because they are molded to follow the social norm of what a man is supposed to be like in today’s society and culture. Men are faced with stereotypes on how masculinity should be like through media, films, video games, sports, and music. When they show just a little emotion, they are judged by others as being “too sensitive” or “too feminine.” This has caused men to become insensitive or dangerous to others or themselves. They hide their true self and struggle to find an outlet to express their feelings.
- Your thoughts/reactions to eight (8) specificmoments
At 5:54, when he said “… Sometimes my friends act like they’re tough, when I feel like they’re not. From the beginning, we’re taught as boys to lock down our emotions…,” I hear this line often. It hurts to know that they feel so trapped in their own emotions and it is seen as feminine if they expressed it. I really feel that if boys and men get to talk about their feelings more, then it would develop a healthier life style for them and for whomever is in their life.
At 7:35 “… We associate masculinity with athletic ability…” This made me think a lot about the Hernandez case where his documentary on Netflix revealed that he might’ve been “in the closet” about his sexuality and how it might’ve contributed to some of his behaviors and actions. It made me kind of upset how people were making such a huge deal about his sexuality because he played a “masculine” sport. So what? It doesn’t change what a great player he was. He was great at football because he had the skills for it.
12:01, When the young man shared his story about distancing himself from his friend who was effeminate, it reminded me a little bit about my friend from high school. When he came out, all of our friends distanced themselves from him because they were scared to be made fun of for hanging out with someone who was gay/ bisexual. They made it seem like it was contagious or something. It’s like they ignored all the reasons why they even became friends with him in the first place and totally left him to fight for himself. It was really hard to see my friend lose friends due to his sexuality.
19:08, this part where the father chose to raise his son alone showed me some sort of humanity in men. He was responsible and took ownership in raising his son alone because his own father was never there to raise him. He knew how important it was for his son to have a father figure because he never had one. This warmed my heart so much. Not alone did he play the father role, but he even played the mother role. He googled up on how to be more sensitive and understanding of his child’s needs as a mother would do. This really warmed my heart a lot.
26:45, when he shared his thoughts on how his mom and dad treated him the same and told him to just deal with it, this really hit me hard because I feel like they totally shut him out and never gave him a chance to share how he felt about his attacks. They made it seem like it was normal to be bullied and beaten. They made him learn how to normalize it. I wish that parents stood up for their children more and protect them. I mean, this might’ve helped him grow tougher skin, but it definitely caused trauma to him.
