Discuss the differences between public and private providers of social welfare services. Which of these two types of agencies would you most prefer to work for? Why?
Reply 1 70 words
“The work of the charity organization societies and the settlements, although dedicated to public service was conducted through organizations that were private social services agencies” (Segal, 2015). Private social services are separate from the government; the government regulates sponsors and contributes financially to social welfare services (Segal, 2015). The relationship is complex due to the government’s partnership with state governments, and funds for the Medicaid program, medical services are provided by a variety of public and private groups (Segal, 2015).
Public agencies “are subject to political majorities and political power; usually, the mission is related to the delivery of public goods or services” (Segal, 2015, pg. 133) an example of work they do would be food stamps. There are also private agencies which are a mixture of public and private sectors. Nonprofit organizations are done by voluntary charity groups that fall under the internal revenue code section (Segal, 2015). For-profit organizations include commercial agencies that provide social services operating on private business principles (Segal, 2015).
If I had to choose which agency I would work for, I would pick a private social service agency to work due I would possibly see more progress and follow through with a private clientele and would get the benefits of being a government employee.

There are three different types of social welfare services, there is public, private for-profit, and private non-profit agencies. Public agencies “are subject to political majorities and political power; usually the mission is related to the delivery of public goods or services” (Segal, 2015, pg. 133) This means that they work for a whole community help them with their needs such as food stamps and housing assistance. Private non-profit agencies and private for-profit are similar in ways but non-profit have values in which their work reflects and for profit is own by a bussing or shareholder.” Public refers to government; voluntary refers to private nonprofit; and commercial refers to private for-profit” (Burch, 1999). If I was to work of one of the two agencies I would work for a public agency because I would like to would for a whole group of people and work to better a number of people not just the ones in a certain circumstance.

Discussion 2 (200 words)
What is social justice? What do civil rights have to do with social justice? Discuss the relationship between the two terms; provide examples.
Reply 1 (70 words)
Social justice is defined as “the level of fairness that exists in society, and the goal of achieving fairness” (Segal, 2016, p. 415). The most basic principle involved in social justice is civil rights. “Civil rights are rights to which people are entitled because they are members of society” (Segal, 2016, p. 143). Social justice cannot exist without civil rights. Civil rights can exist, at least in part, without achievement of social justice. “All people have the same basic rights, protections, opportunities, and social benefits, as well as the same social obligations. When those rights are not upheld or there are barriers to achieving fairness, government has been called upon to ensure the establishment of social justice” (Segal, 2016, p. 144). This is where our society is today. Many civil rights have been accepted and protected, but many are still being sought and fought for, gay rights, abortion rights, and fair voting rights all fall into this area of concern.
We see the cries for social justice everywhere we turn these days. Police brutality and cases such as George Floyd have brought the civil rights discussion back in the strongest way, I’d say, since the 1960’s. Cries of discrimination and unequal treatment of African-American’s by law enforcement have dominated the news over and over again. Strides have been made in some areas, but there is still more to do. Voting rights is an issue that truly interests me. I watched the 2020 election in Georgia very closely. Stacey Abrams was working incredibly hard to help people break through barriers to voting in that state and, for all of her work, that state turned blue on the election map for the first time a decade. Social justice comes in that people should not have to work so hard just to be able to exercise their right to vote. Voting rights has been a big issue for a long time, but has come to the forefront over the last few years. This is true for all minority groups, Native Americans, African-Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, etc. I look forward to the days when literally everyone in this country that is eligible to vote can do so freely and easily.

Social justice means that everybody is supposed to have the same opportunities and everyone has the same rights. “Just” is the same as “fair”, and fairness is considered to bring harmony and contentment to people in society. According to Segal, “all people have the same basic rights, protections, opportunities, and social benefits, as well as the same social obligations” when discussing social justice. Civil rights make sure that the American people in society are entitled to the same things, which they deserve. In order to have a better chance to achieve social justice, the law is protecting civil rights, meaning that people could be punished for breaking them, emphasizing the power of social justice that represents fairness. “It provides the framework for our system of government” (Segal, 2015), which protects personal behavior and expression as well as all citizens society and so on, meaning that the relationship between social justice and civil right is that they are working for fairness and equality for all, such as the right to vote and public education. First, social justice was an idea, then it became legislation, the civil rights act.
