The purpose of the assignment is to identify strategic security-related issues in a major for-profit corporation. These issues should be related to the context of how the corporation is achieving its goals currently and its prospects for the future. Assignment:
1) Select any publicly held corporation for your analysis. A Google search will identify the corporation’s homepage. Look under investor information. There you will see documents that are filed with the Security Exchange Commission (SEC) on a regular basis. These can be the data sources for your analysis. But also learn about the enterprise generally.
2) Read the latest proxy to obtain information on issues facing shareholders who are being asked to vote on the Board and perhaps other issues.
3) Read the latest 10-K which also has come to be an annual report. Some of these documents will have letters to shareholders putting a positive light and spin on current events of the corporation. Inside the 10-K look for Section 1A which identifies risks for the future of the commercial entity. Think about these matters.
4) Write a three (3) to five (5) page report putting in your own words the following: a) How the business is doing now b) What the near-term prospects are c) What the strategic risk issues are that would concern a chief security officer
5) Requirements: a) Follow the format requirements as outlined on your syllabus b) Front page of the 10-K Report selected (does not count toward page total)

What is the difference between a traditional News Release and a Social Media Release (SMR)?
A News Release is a written communication directed at members of the news media for the purpose of influencing the media to write favourably about the information discussed in the news release. All News Releases contain standard types of content, such as a headline, description of the ‘story’, quotes, call to action, information about the organization, contact details, etc. Please see News Release Format (posted under Content / Media Issue Assignment) for content to include in a regular News Release.
A Social Media News Release (SMR) has the same type of content you’d find in a regular News Release, except a SMR is tailored for social media platforms. What this means is, the headline is short enough that the media outlets which receive the SMR can share that headline as a tweet on Twitter, video links are included so media outlets can share the video clip, media outlets can also take the images in a SMR and post them on their Instagram accounts, etc. In summary, the SMR has more images and video, and tends to be much briefer than a regular News Release. A Sample Social Media Release is posted under Content / Media Issue Assignment to give you an idea of content and format (note: this sample SMR was written by a Toronto business wanting to let its stakeholders know about a fundraising initiative it had started.)

What do I need to do for Part 3a of this assignment?
Your specific task in this section (Part 3a) is to write a Social Media Release. As mentioned above, assume you are on the Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) board of directors. It’s the start of the fall 2020 semester, and you’ve heard that the COVID-19 pandemic has made it very difficult for Camosun students and recent graduates to find meaningful co-op positions and/or career jobs. You’d like the local news media (Nexus, Douglas Magazine, CHEK, and CBC Victoria) and key stakeholders (Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce and CPRS-VI) to publish a story about this issue. Ideally, you’d also like the media coverage to highlight the skills and abilities Camosun students/grads can contribute to our community by profiling a Camosun student/grad in the story (media) or, for stakeholders – by profiling a Camosun student/grad on the stakeholder’s website and social media platforms.
Remember, a SMR follows the same standard format as a regular News Release. Refer to News Release format guidelines for content to include and the SMR sample for how to adapt and present that content when writing a SMR (both of these are posted under Content / Media Issue Assignment). P
