Mr. and Mrs. Arahan, an older couple in their seventies, have been living with their oldest daughter, her husband of 15 years, and their two children, ages 12 and 14. CASE STUDY: An Older Immigrant Couple: Mr. and Mrs. Arahan Mr. and Mrs. Arahan, an older couple in their seventies, have been living with their oldest daughter, her husband of 15 years, and their two children, ages 12 and 14. They all live in a middle-class neighborhood in a large city’s suburb. Mr. and Mrs. Arahan both had a college education and worked full-time in their home country. Mr. Arahan also received a considerable sum of money and real estate being the only child of rich parents. Their daughter worked as a registered nurse in the United States, where she met her husband, a pharma company representative. When their daughter became a U.S. citizen and petitioned them as immigrants, the older couple migrated to the United States. The couple jumped at the chance to visit the United States because they were approaching retirement.
Life in the United States was different for the Arahans than it was in their home country, but they adjusted quickly because they were both healthy and spoke English effectively. They spent the majority of their time caring for their two grandchildren and the house. The older couple discovered that they had more free time as their grandchildren grew older. The daughter and her husband progressed in their careers and put in additional hours at work. During the week, there were rarely family dinners. The daughter, her husband, and their children spent their weekends socializing with their own acquaintances. The couple started to feel lonely and yearned for a more active lifestyle.
Mr. and Mrs. Arahan began to consider returning to their native land, where they still had relatives and acquaintances. However, they would have found it impossible to live there due to political and economic concerns. Furthermore, they had grown accustomed to the American way of life, which included all of the contemporary conveniences and an abundance of commodities that were difficult to come by in their home country. They were apprehensive, though, that they might not be able to withstand the cold months and that small health issues would increase as they grew older. Knowing that their daughter had only saved money for their grandchildren’s college education, they wondered who would take care of them if they grew frail and where they would live if they became really frail. They shared their feelings to their daughter, who became concerned about her parents’ emotions.
This older couple had been to church on a regular basis but had never participated in any church-related activities. The church bulletin announced the formation of parish nursing, which would be staffed by two retired registered nurses. The pair was present during the parish clinic’s initial opening. They were introduced to one of the registered nurses, who had a brief conversation with them about the services available. The registered nurse had worked as a community health nurse for the majority of her career. Mr. and Mrs. Arahan were notified of her availability to assist them with any health-related difficulties.
