Scenario
For the past two years, Juan and Maria had been attempting to conceive a child. Elaina, their first child, was now four and a half years old, having been conceived before they moved to their current home and born without incident. Maria, on the other hand, had her third miscarriage in the last 14 months yesterday. Juan and Maria had taken a sample of the well water and had it analyzed before they moved into their current home nearly three years ago. The water was confirmed to be safe to drink at the time. However, six months later, a large-scale rural hog farm was erected less than a half mile distant and began operations soon after. The odor from the massive garbage lagoon was first undetectable, but it was now visible on most days. In the previous year, state inspectors had paid many visits to the operation. Juan was concerned about the safety of the water in their well. He made the decision to have their well water tested once more.
Read the scenario at the start of Chapter 14 to get a sense of what’s going on (p. 407). Then consider the following questions.
Many people, like Juan and Maria, live in areas where large-scale poultry or animal businesses have established themselves. List three more health measures Juan and Maria may have done before moving into their current residence.
Let’s say the well water is found to be high in nitrates. What steps could Juan and Maria take to boost their chances of a successful pregnancy if they are unable to move? What might they do to make their well water safe again? What agencies at the local, state, and federal levels might be able to assist them? Environmental injustice is a concept used to describe circumstances in which unwanted industries or waste disposal facilities are preferentially positioned in minority regions. Is there anything in Juan and Maria’s position that suggests they are victims of environmental injustice?
Is there an issue with industrial hog farms in your county or state? What about feedlots for cattle? What are the rules in your state regulating the building of massive factory farms?
Residents in rural areas must be wary of not only water contamination, but also air pollution and soil toxicity. Were you aware of the threats these residents faced before reading this scenario?
