You’ll write a policy brief on a topic related to the environment and development in the Global South for this assignment. I propose that you choose a topic relating to your work for Assignment #1: Country Status Report. Specific criteria for themes are mentioned below.
The assignment is due on March 30, 2020 by 11:59 pm (i.e., before midnight on that date) (i.e., before midnight on that date). We will be going over the task in detail in the Tutorial for Week 3, and in the Whats On video for Week 7. As Furthermore, the Extra Optional Makeup Tutorial (uploaded with the Week 7 materials on Quercus) will lead you through some crucial parts of policy briefs.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
In completing this assignment, you will:\s be able to explain the purpose and format of policy briefs in the international development\scontext;\s identify and investigate a problem or issue relevant to environment and development in the\sGlobal South;\s define the problem or issue in a manner that is sufficiently well focused to be addressed\seffectively in a policy brief format;\s summarize the issue at a level that would be relevant for an experienced international\spolicymaker; and,\s propose several policy solutions by explaining the situation and the policy landscape, and/or\sadvocate for one particular solution to the issue that you have identified.
BACKGROUND:
But what you could wonder is a policy brief?
The UN FAO defines a policy brief as follows:
A policy brief is a concise summary of a particular issue, the policy alternatives to deal with it, and some recommendations on the best approach. It is aimed towards government officials and those who are interested in developing or influencing policy. Policy briefs can take numerous formats. It has an attractive design, and may feature one or more photos.

Three qualities are similar to almost all policy briefs:
1. They are brief (usually 1-4 pages; some are as little as 700 words, but we will aim for 1500- 2000 words in this project) more than 4 pages would be a report rather than a brief.
2. They provide a succinct explanation of a certain subject.3. They speak to policymakers, presenting choices and/or ideas for dealing with the particular situation.
There are two primary types of policy brief:
An advocacy brief argues in favour of a certain course of action. An objective brief presents balanced facts and options for the policymaker.
UNFAO (2011, op cit.) states several prerequisites for policy briefs:
Provide enough context for the reader to grasp the issue or problem. Convince the reader that the problem must be addressed promptly.
Provide information regarding options (in an objective brief); or, provide facts and recommendations supporting one alternative (in an advocacy brief).
Stimulate the reader to make a decision.
As well, policy briefs normally are formatted so they will capture the attention of policymakers, who are busy people with (often) short attention spans. The pages are meticulously set up, with interesting graphics, possibly even a photograph, and some manner of accentuating the essential topics.
In terms of structure, there are various ways to construct a policy brief. Here is a proposal (you dont necessarily have to follow this its just a proposed organizational framework for your content):

In addition, a policy brief should be eye-catching and easy to read, and therefore will generally incorporate any or most of the following:

No aspects of the required answer are missing. Use of Sources (worth a maximum of 20% of the total points). Zero points: Student failed to include citations and/or references. Or the student failed to submit a final paper. 5 out 20 points: Sources are seldom cited to support statements and/or format of citations are not recognizable as APA 6th Edition format. There are major errors in the formation of the references and citations. And/or there is a major reliance on highly questionable. The Student fails to provide an adequate synthesis of research collected for the paper. 10 out 20 points: References to scholarly sources are occasionally given; many statements seem unsubstantiated. Frequent errors in APA 6th Edition format, leaving the reader confused about the source of the information. There are significant errors of the formation in the references and citations.
