Biology 2415 Assignment 3: Cell cycle regulators in Drosophila melanogaster
Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with an opportunity to conduct research related to cell cycle regulation, learn to read and understand scientific journal articles, and to practice communicating scientific concepts in a formal paper. Background: In lecture, we learned that about a number of cell cycle regulation mechanisms in animals. One popular model organism for the study of cell cycle regulation is Drosophila melanogaster or the fruit fly. Though D. melanogaster is not a vertebrate, many of the findings related to cell cycle regulation are conserved throughout Kingdom Animalia.
Assignment: In a maximum of 1000 words, you will answer the following questions:
1. Name one protein that regulates cell cycle progression in D. melanogaster.
2. What is the structure and function of this protein? You may select proteins mentioned in lecture but you cannot document the exact function discussed in lecture. (E.g. Some Cdks have more functions than mentioned in lecture)
3. How did the researchers experimentally determine the structure and/or function of this protein? You must find at least one primary source of scientific journal article to support your answer.
You should discuss the answers to these questions in an essay-style format, with a title, an introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.
Formatting guidelines:
Assignments must be double-spaced with standard 1-inch margins on side.
Use Arial 12-pt. font.
You must cite all sources used for this assignment, including web pages and videos. Your paper should include in-text citations as well as a reference list at the end. The reference list is not included in your word count.
Do not number your responses. You are not required to answer the questions in the order assigned. Your assignment should be submitted in essay format.
I would prefer if you did not include figures in your assignment. You will not be penalized for it but you will not receive any additional marks for figures. In addition, I intend to evaluate your ability to verbally communicate your understanding and I challenge you not to rely on images to communicate your point.Additional information:
Drosophila researchers are notorious for naming genes colourful names. Take some time to explore all of your options and choose something intriguing to you!
You may not use a review or a methods paper to complete this assignment.
Write your paper at a level that any of your classmates taking this class could understand. You can use some vocabulary such as checkpoint and phosphorylation cascade but some vocabulary must be explained, such as heterozygosity or true-breeding lines.
Information in my lectures may be considered common knowledge and you do not have to cite my lecture notes. However, you still must state information from my notes in your own words. If you are borrowing information from your Genetics instructor, you must cite them in APA-style.
If you decide to use a protein involved in regulating development (e.g. Interacts with Notch, Wnt, Hedgehog, etc.), do not focus on the developmental pathway but on the specific interaction of your selected protein with the other proteins. Developmental genetics is beyond the scope of this course.
If you are having issues understanding the technical aspects of your selected paper, come and see me! I am happy to walk you through the basics of, say, Drosophila breeding experiments if you need.try to get scientific articles from langara library
