Discussion: Examining Nursing Specialties
You have probably seen one or more of the many inspirational posters about decisions. A visual such as a forked road or a street sign is typically pictured, along with a quote designed to inspire.
Often decisions are not so easily inspired. Perhaps you discovered this when choosing a specialty within the MSN program. This decision is a critical part of your plan for success, and you no doubt want to get it right. This is yet another area where your network can help, as well as other sources of information that can help you make an informed choice.
To Prepare:
Reflect on your decision to pursue a specialty within the MSN program, including your professional and academic goals as they relate to your program/specialization.
For the discussion: Post an explanation of your choice of a nursing specialty within the program. Describe any difficulties you had (or are having) in making your choice, and the factors that drove/are driving your decision. Identify at least one professional organization affiliated with your chosen specialty and provide details on becoming a member.

I work in acute care hospitals; at the time, I knew I wanted to go back to school. Still, I wasn’t sure when or what to focus on, that is until two years ago when I started working at a psychiatric facility it opened up a whole new world for me, which is when I decided to pursue my MSN to become a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.
Before applying to Walden, I went online to research schools with the PMHNP program, and I found a few schools that I called to inquire about their programs and curriculum. Walden University stood out to me because the program was 100% online, enabling me to have the flexibility that I need; also, its visions and goals aligned with mine.
First, I needed a school that can incorporate caring human values, ethical principles, cultural and spiritual sensitivity in all aspects of the nursing practice as I advance in my role. A school that is tailored in supporting its students by positively impacts them, where students can acquire the knowledge they need to impact society. As a nurse, my goal is to make a difference in my patient’s lives by providing them with the best care possible and improving health outcomes. I learned that Walden gives back to the community by teaming up with other organizations. I know that a school’s culture plays a role in what type of nurse a student becomes.
According to Walden University (2020) missions and goals, Walden envisions a distinctively different 21st-century learning community where knowledge is judged worthy to the degree that it can be applied by its graduates to the immediate solutions of critical societal challenges, thereby advancing the greater global good”.
Walden provides relevant educational programs based on the scholar-practitioner model for a diverse array of nursing professionals seeking to enhance their abilities by implementing evidence-based practices and core and specialty nursing knowledge to transform society. Walden’s MSN program relates to my career and academic goals, which are to successfully graduate from the MSN program with the depth, knowledge, and intensity of training to be proficient in my field and positively impact my community.
