Tracking the Policy: (CSWE: 5)
With the explosion of social networks and easy access to the internet (for most), social policy has found its way into mainstream media as there are often hashtags related to immigration, stand your ground laws, the environment, fair trade, etc. The purpose of this project is to identify, research, and reflect on how a specific policy broadly relates to your agency and the impact it may have on the work that they do.
1. Identify: Select and explain a NORTH CAROLINA local or state, or national policy that broadly impacts Homeless Veterans OR Homelessness in general.
2.Research: Using various forms of media track the content related to the policy like social media, news, blogs, etc.
3.Present: Complete a 5-7 minute detailed slideshow and video presentation reflecting on your research. Students are required to utilize Powerpoint or Google Slides. Use APA citation throughout your presentation. Your slideshow presentation must include the following information in this order:
2.
1. Who is talking about the policy (e.g., politicians, organizations, general public)? Why does this matter?
2. What trends emerged? What are the implications of these trends? How do these implications impact clients and constituencies?
3. Has the policy made any movement? (e.g., Congress passed a bill related to it)
4. How do you think this information is being viewed/received by people who are not social workers?
5. In what ways could your findings impact VETERAN SERVICE AGENCIES IN NORTH CAROLINA?
3. References: At least 10 sources are needed and should be written using APA Style (Happy Referencing!)A few pointers:
· You may also choose a topic that is not yet a policy, but still mainstream
· Choose a mainstream policy/topic so it’s easier to find sources
· You will need to set the parameters (e.g., over the last 6 months, within a year)
· Pictures are welcome to enhance your visual presentation. Video clips can be no longer than 1 minute total
· In terms of sources feel free to use any forms of media even if it is not peer-reviewed or scholarly. The goal is to capture all of what is happening related to the policy. The only scholarly reference needs to be related to when you are describing the policy or providing evidence for the topic.
· Example: Let’s say for example you were using Immigration you could reference new clips from ABC, Fox or CNN News, Tweets from the President, clips from the Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Charlotte Observer articles, and random articles from Facebook.
