VIRTUAL LEARNING
The majority of people thought there would be many positive outcomes with Virtual learning. However, what was not considered is all of the possible negative issues that can come with online learning. What are the possible negative outcomes from virtual learning? According to a few articles, I found it has been a massive eye-opener for students and parents, and even teachers with how difficult online learning is during this COVID-19 pandemic. While schools were forced to shut down during this pandemic, students were forced to go to school online and learn over zoom. I found a few articles that support my reasoning as to why Virtual learning harms students.
According to (DeWitt) from EdWeek.org article (6 Reasons Students are not showing up for Virtual Learning), “Most of us will never feel as confident or competent about how we teach virtually as we do when the students are in front of us (DeWitt).” Not only do the students have to adjust to a new “classroom environment” to learn, but the teachers are struggling themselves, attempting to replicate what they do when their students are in front of them. In this article, the writer pointed out how some teachers have problems finding a quiet or a private area in their own home because they have roommates or live in a small studio apartment. I feel awkward when sitting in my room while on Zoom for class, knowing there is a high possibility other students are looking at my background. Not to mention, this article made a valid point, “Even in areas where the WIFI is usually strong, there are interruptions.” For instance, last week, the
Professor could not post our assignments/homework due to the power being out. Therefore, the students had a shorter amount of time to complete the assignments.
The next article I found lists a few of both positive and negative disadvantages, discovering everything students and teachers need to know about online education. In this article (Gautam) ELearningIndustry.com (Advantages and Disadvantages of Learning Online) says one of the advantages is, “Online learning eliminates the cost points of student transportation, student meals, and most importantly, real estate (Gautam).” I think online education does cut the costs down for the schools but becomes more of a financial burden for the parental. Many families are barely affording essentials for their everyday life. Now the parental has added stress and has to worry about how they will print their child’s homework/class assignments if they do not have or can even afford a printer. As an example, I have two nieces that are currently in Kindergarten and Preschool. I have been printing almost 100 pages weekly for each niece because they do not have a printer at home. A significant disadvantage is that most teachers and professors lack basic technical knowledge when performing their jobs solely online. Technology is supposed to make our lives easier and make things move faster. However, that is not always the case.
I found a News-Letter article (Belram), “How online learning can affect student health.” This article made many valid points about sleep deprivation and the student’s mental and physical health. The first point, “Students in a different time zone than their institutions are now sacrificing sleep to wake up for classes on Zoom (Belram).” I could not agree with this more because my niece has to wake up at a specific time to attend her Kindergarten class on zoom since her teacher is out of state. Another point, “Virtual learning has inevitably increased the number of time students spend on digital devices every day (Belram).” Not only is she on an electronic device for a good portion of her day now because of zoom, but now she wants additional time to play a game on an electronic device after her class is over. The amount of blue light these students are taking in will affect them in the long run physically. According to my final resource, a few students in all grade levels have expressed their experience with taking online classes and the toll it has taken on their mental health. Nayeli Mercado, who is 15, said, “Once quarantine started, where we do not go out, I feel way more mentally exhausted.
Along with that, I’ve been really emotional.” Online learning takes the students away from interacting and socializing with another student I have. Student (Yashika Joshi), who is 17, said, “Distance learning has been difficult. It’s been hard to manage, teaching yourself through assignments.” I can relate to her when she says that because I am that student who gets distracted exceptionally easily. For me, I need to be in a classroom environment so I can actually focus.
In conclusion, considering that the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed down tremendously is virtual learning still the best option? What about the financial impact on the student/parents? What about the effect on student’s mental health with virtual learning? The articles that I found have been beneficial and help illustrate my point as to why I am against Virtual education, according to quoted sources virtual learning has many negative outcomes. For me, school is a hands-on experience where you are physically there with a group of peers who are there to study a specific subject and learn to grow together. With that being said, virtual education is suitable for a temporary measure but not a permanent solution.
